The name corrphycene for [18]porphyrin(2.1.0.1) is derived from the fact that these compounds combine structural elements from corrins/ corroles, porphyrins and acenes. Two general synthetic strategies have been developed for the final cyclization step of a linear tctrapyrrole leading to the macrotetracycle. [Pg.676]

In this contribution, in order to illustrate tlie importance of shake-up bands for extended systems, we simulate and compare on correlated grounds the ionization spectra of polyethylene and poly acetylene, the most simplest systems one can consider to represent insulating or semi-conducting polymers. Conclusions for the infinite stereoregular chains are drawn by exU apolation of the trends observed with the first terms of the related n-alkane or acene series, CnH2n+2 and CnHn+2. respectively, with n=2, 4, 6 and 8. Our simulations are also compared to X-ray photoionization spectra (7) recorded on gas phase samples of ethylene, butadiene and hexatriene, which provide a clear experimental manisfestation of the construction of correlation bands (8-12). [Pg.78]

In 1993, Scherf and Chmil described the first synthesis of a ladder-type poly(pflra-phenylene-czs-vinylene) (116) [138]. On the one hand, ladder polymer 116 represents, a planar poly(phenylene) containing additional vinylene bridges on the other hand, it is a poly(phenylenevinylene) with aryl-aryl linkages in the polymeric main chain. The target macromolecules, as fully aromatic ladder polymers, are composed of all-carbon six-membered rings in the double-stranded main chain (an example of angularly annelated poly(acene)s). [Pg.216]

While it is in the triplet state a molecule may undergo typical diradical reactions. This provides a plausible mechanism for radical-like reactions of substances that are largely diamagnetic. They are partly converted to the triplet state by light, or in the case of low lying triplet states, by heat. Probable examples of this mechanism are the photooxidation of rubrene and the photooxidation and dimerization of anthracene and higher members of the acene series.76... [Pg.42]

Generally, benzene and naphthalene derivatives show only little reactivity as dienes in Diels-Alder synthesis, contrary to anthracene and the higher acene derivatives which are frequently used as dienes. Exceptions are the reactions of benzene and naphthalene derivatives with highly reactive dienophiles such as dicyanoacetylene (DCA), which... [Pg.569]

The present section is organized as follows. Firstly, the reactivity and aromaticity of the different rings that compose an acene system as a reactant is analyzed, and secondly, the aromaticity of the TS structures of pericyclic and pseudopericyclic reactions is discussed. [Pg.425]

Recent quantum chemical studies of addition reactions to acenes and other PAHs involve the Diels-Alder reactions of ethene [86] and of 1 Ag oxygen [87] as well as... [Pg.426]

Oxo-vanadium derivatives include numerous examples of Schiff base complexes, the importance of which is increasing in that they can act as insulin-enhancing agents.3 For instance, the vanadyl(IV) derivatives of TV.TV -ethylenebisCsalicylideneimine), [VO(salen)], A TV -disalicylidene-o-phenylenediamine, [VO(saloph)], and iV,Ar -ethylenebis(acetylaceto-natoimine), [VO(acen)], are shown in Scheme 1. [Pg.220]

These 3d1 complexes display a quasireversible one-electron oxidation corresponding to the chemically reversible step [VOivL]/[VOvL] + (L = Schiff base ligand). As an example, Figure 3 shows the cyclic voltammetric response of [VO(acen)].7 The relative potential values are reported in Table 3. [Pg.221]

The role played by the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing effects of the various ligands in rendering the oxidation process easier for [VO(salen)] compared to [VO(saloph)] or [VO(acen)] is evident. The influence of the solvent on the redox potentials is also clear. [Pg.221]

The method of photoselection to study the polarization of triplet-triplet transitions has been applied by El-Sayed and Pavlopoulos 6) to several poly-acenes. Let us discuss some of the results obtained on napthalene, where the -axishas been chosen along the long molecular axis and they-axis along the short one. The first very weak Si- - 5o absorption band x-polarized) is... [Pg.27]
