Probability Example

The probability of being involved in an accident from a chemical spill at a chemical manufacturing plant was determined to be 30 out of 100 accidents reported or 30%. The probability of the accident resulting in lost workdays was determined to be 10 out of every 100 accidents reported or 10%. The safety manager wishes to determine the probability of an accident resulting in lost workdays given the fact the accident was due to a chemical spill. First, he or she calculates the probability of a chemical spill accident resulting in lost workdays

Notice that the CF2 fluorines of the Z isomer of 4,4-difluoro-2-butene are significantly deshielded relative to those of the E isomer. This is another probable example of steric deshielding by a proximate, in this case cis-alkyl group (see Chapter 2, Section 2.2.1).
