Absorbable collagen sponge

An ultraviolet spectroscopic method was presented, and used for the assay of procaine and nitrofural in a multicomponent collagen sponge without prior separation of the drugs [33]. Crushed Collagen Sponge (0.1 g) was dissolved in 70 mL of 1 mM HCl, and heated for ten minutes. The solution was cooled, diluted to volume, mixed, filtered, whereupon the first 20 mL was discarded. The absorbance of the analyte solution was then measured at 290 and 373 nm (against 1 mM HCl) for procaine and nitrofural, respectively. 

Another typical implantable product is the horse collagen sponge loaded with gentamicin. The implant is absorbable. High antibiotic concentrations are achieved at the site of implantation over several days. 

In contrast, collagen absorbable hemostatic sponges are sterilized either by exposure to ethylene oxide gas, y-rays, dry heat or an electron beam. CollastaH is an example of a material that is sterilized by exposure to ethylene oxide gas and Avitene is a microfibrillar collagen hemostat that is sterilized by exposure... 

Gelatin is produced by partial acid or partial alkaline hydrolysis of animal collagen. It has a wide variety of therapeutic and pharmaceutical uses. It is often used in the manufacture of hard and soft capsule shells, suppositories and tablets, and is sometimes used as a sponge during surgical procedures, as it can absorb many times its own weight of blood.
