Low dry matter silages contaminated with soil may also contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium known to be responsible for several diseases such as meningoencephalitis, anterior uveitis, and placentitis and subsequent abortion in cattle. A number of fatalities in ruminant animals (mainly sheep) on silage diets have been confirmed as listerioses. Listeriosis in horses is uncommon, probably because silage is rarely given to horses. [Pg.502]
