Ability Abstract

Clients are assigned different cognitive tasks that exercise the specific areas of the brain that seem to have sustained injury. Tasks can run the gamut, but frequendy involve engaging in spatial-ability, abstraction, verbal, memory, and... [Pg.224]

The effect substitution on the phenolic ring has on activity has been the subject of several studies (11—13). Hindering the phenolic hydroxyl group with at least one bulky alkyl group ia the ortho position appears necessary for high antioxidant activity. Neatly all commercial antioxidants are hindered ia this manner. Steric hindrance decreases the ability of a phenoxyl radical to abstract a hydrogen atom from the substrate and thus produces an alkyl radical (14) capable of initiating oxidation (eq. 18). [Pg.224]

Although most acidity functions have been applied only to acidic solutions, some work has also been done with strongly basic solutions. The H function, which is used for highly acidic solutions when the base has a charge of — 1, can also be used for strongly basic solvents, in which case it measures the ability of these solvents to abstract a proton from a neutral acid BH. When a solvent becomes protonated, its conjugate acid is known as a lyonium ion. [Pg.335]

It is easier to abstract a hydrogen atom and initiate lipid peroxidation from a fatty acid that has bis-allylic centres than from a fatty-acid side chain with only one double bond. It follows, therefore, that fatty-acid composition should influence the ability of a molecule such as LDL to act as a substrate for peroxidation. The potential... [Pg.24]

Dementia An organic mental disorder characterized by a general loss of intellectual abilities involving impairment in memory, judgment, and abstract thinking, as well as changes in personality. [Pg.1564]

These rod-shaped ligands share a sterically efficient terminal N-donor and their divalent Co chemistry is well established. They will be discussed here only with selected examples. [Co (NCMe)6](TFPB)2 (TFPB- = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifhioromethyl)phenyl)borate)) has been synthesized and characterized in the solid state along with a number of other divalent transition metal analogs.357 As a result of the extremely poor coordinating ability of the anion and facile loss of MeCN ligands from the cation, the salt is an excellent source of naked Co2+ ions. Thermolysis up to 100 °C leads to the loss of one MeCN and formation of a r -bound nitrile, whereas above 130 °C decomposition occurs with loss of MeCN and abstraction of fluoride from the anion to form CoF2. [Pg.38]

The utility of a process control was demonstrated by constructing a series of slides containing mouse and rabbit serum. Five rows of a series of dilutions of each species were applied to slides, and these were then stained in mixed cocktails of goat anti-rabbit and goat anti-mouse secondary antibody, followed by routine peroxidase-DAB visualization steps. The mixed cocktails were constructed as variable mixtures to demonstrate the ability to detect lack of sensitivity of either of the cocktail components. The results of this study were published in abstract form.15 Clearly, this approach can provide a way to monitor changes in secondary antibody cocktails, either due to manufacturing variables or differential aging of components within the cocktail (Fig. 10.5). [Pg.180]

Abstract. The Milky Way harbours two disks that appear distinct concerning scale-heights, kinematics, and elemental abundance patterns. Recent years have seen a surge of studies of the elemental abundance trends in the disks using high resolution spectroscopy. Here I will review and discuss the currently available data. Special focus will also be put on how we define stars to be members of either disk, and how current models of galaxy formation favour that thick disks are formed from several accreted bodies. The ability for the stellar abundance trends to test such predictions are discussed. [Pg.15]

The above examples show the ability of microsome reductases to oxidize substrates in the processes where the first step is a one-electron reduction, which may or may not be accompanied by superoxide formation. However, cytochrome P-450 can directly oxidize some substrates including amino derivatives. For example, mitochondrial oxidation (dehydrogenation) of 1,4-dihydropyridines apparently proceeds by two mechanisms via hydrogen atom abstraction or one-electron oxidation [48 50]. Guengerich and Bocker [49] have shown that... [Pg.768]
