A -Pentane

A pentane violation arises when there are successive gauche(+) and gauche(-) torsion angles in an alkane tin.

The reaction is a sensitive one, but is subject to a number of interferences. The solution must be free from large amounts of lead, thallium (I), copper, tin, arsenic, antimony, gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, and from elements in sufficient quantity to colour the solution, e.g. nickel. Metals giving insoluble iodides must be absent, or present in amounts not yielding a precipitate. Substances which liberate iodine from potassium iodide interfere, for example iron(III) the latter should be reduced with sulphurous acid and the excess of gas boiled off, or by a 30 per cent solution of hypophosphorous acid. Chloride ion reduces the intensity of the bismuth colour. Separation of bismuth from copper can be effected by extraction of the bismuth as dithizonate by treatment in ammoniacal potassium cyanide solution with a 0.1 per cent solution of dithizone in chloroform if lead is present, shaking of the chloroform solution of lead and bismuth dithizonates with a buffer solution of pH 3.4 results in the lead alone passing into the aqueous phase. The bismuth complex is soluble in a pentan-l-ol-ethyl acetate mixture, and this fact can be utilised for the determination in the presence of coloured ions, such as nickel, cobalt, chromium, and uranium. 

When there are five carbons, there are three different ways to arrange them. A pentane is an alkane molecule where the carbons are all in a row. 

A pentane solution of terf-butyllithium (purchased from either Alfa Inorganics, Inc. or Lithium Corporation of America, Inc.) was standardized by one of the previously described titration procedures (Note 1). If possible, it is desirable to use a freshly opened bottle of lert-butyllithium since previously used bottles of this reagent often contain lithium ferf-butoxide which will lead to formation of a contaminant in the final product (Note 10). 

Silica gel was purchased from VWR Scientific (230-400 mesh). A 45-mm diameter column was employed and 50 g silica gel was loaded as a pentane slurry.

Bis(Tj-indenyl)dicarbonyltitanium (34) was first reported in 1975 independently by two different research groups using different synthetic routes. Rausch and Alt discovered that the photolysis of a pentane solution of bis(i7-indenyl)dimethyltitanium in a CO atmosphere resulted in the evolution of methane and the formation of 34 in 50% yield (75). 

In 1982 Ernst and Liu prepared the novel complex, bis(rj-2,4-dimethylpentadienyl)carbonyltitanium (63) by exposure of a pentane solution of bis(Tj-2,4-dimethylpentadienyl)titanium (64) ( open tita-nocene ) to CO (113). Moffett [179] determined chromium in seawater by Zeeman corrected graphite tube atomisation atomic absorption spectrometry. The chromium is first complexed with a pentan-2,4 dione solution of ammonium 1 pyrrolidine carbodithioc acid, then this complex extracted from the water with a ketonic solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone, 4-methylpentan-2-one or diisobutyl ketone. 

The two related complexes [Li4 2-As(SiMe3)2 2 3-As(SiMe3)2 2 (THF)2] (37) and [Li As(SiMe3)2 (THF)2]2 have been isolated and structurally characterized (103). A mixture of diethyl 2-bromo-l-phenylethenylphosphonite (30.3 g, 0.1 mol) and dimethyl maleate (14.4 g, 0.1 mol) was stirred for 4 h at room temperature under an argon atmosphere. In procedure A, a sample is mixed with pentane and centrifuged, after which the resid or asphalt solution is decanted and the precipitate is washed twice with pentane, dried, and weighed. For toluene-insoluble constituents, a separate sample of the resid or asphalt is mixed with pentane and centrifuged. The precipitate is washed twice with pentane, once with toluene-alcohol solution, and once with toluene. The insoluble material is then dried and weighed. In procedure B, procedure A is followed except that instead of pentane, a pentane-coagulant solution is used.
