The zoster vaccine is widely recommended for the elderly for the prevention of herpes zoster. The age groups for which it is recommended vary around the world. For instance, the ACIP recommends the zoster vaccine for adults over the age of 60. This includes individuals who have had previous episodes of herpes zoster, or those living with chronic medical conditions. In the United Kingdom, the recommended age group is 70- to 79-year-olds [81 ]. [Pg.475]

The varicella vaccine is made up of an attenuated Oka strain of varicella zoster virus. This is a live attenuated vaccine. Attenuation was achieved by performing serial passages through human embryonic lung cells, embryonic guinea pig cells, and human diploid cells. [Pg.1246]

Herpes Zoster (Shingles) Zostavax is a live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster in individuals 60 years or older. It is supplied in frozen lyophilized form and reconstituted before vaccination. The vaccine boosts VZV-specific immunity and protects individuals against zosters and its complications. [Pg.106]

The most notable example of live attenuated vaccines is the smallpox vaccine, first developed by Edward Jenner, although the origin of the vaccine (vaccinia virus) remains obscure. More recent examples of live attenuated vaccines include most of the viral vaccines currently in use, such as measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) and varicella zoster (VZV) vaccines, and some... [Pg.315]

Live vaccines always trigger concern when given to immunocompromised individuals. Previously the zoster and varicella vaccines have not been recommended in transplant recipients. A study looked at the use of the varicella vaccine in paediatric liver transplant patients. Thirty-six children were vaccinated and followed up with diary cards and phone calls. Importantly, no breakthrough zoster disease was seen. The vaccine was also sufficiently seroprotective, with 97% of study participants maintaining their seroprotective titres at the long-term follow-up (median 4.1years) [78 ]. [Pg.474]
