Zircon Raman

Using a combination of IR, UV/VIS reflection and Raman spectroscopies, thermally treated corundum and zircon and radioactively irradiated topaz and spodumen maybe identified (Tretyakova and Tretaykova 1996). [Pg.322]

The second provenance criterion is based on the identification of inclusions in gemstones. Micro-Raman spectrometry was used for this task in almandine garnets. Various inclusions were observed like apatite, zircon, monazite, calcite, and quartz and two of them, curved needles of sillimanite (Al2Si05) and 10-pm metamict radioactive crystals, were specifically found in archaeological garnets. Fig. 6 shows the Raman spectra of a sillimanite needle, which is a mineral formed under a high temperature and high pressure metamorphism. [Pg.10]

Excitation by CW laser with 532 and 780 nm revealed multiple narrow lines (Fig. 4.92). Recently cw luminescence spectra of zircon were smdied under different laser excitations including artificially activated samples (Lenz et al. 2015). It was found that Raman spectra of zircon may be obscured strongly by emissions of Tm " and Nd " if spectra were recorded using 785 nm laser-excitation. Emissions of Er " typically interfere with Raman spectra obtained with green excitation. In the 532 and 514 excitations the " S3/2-" ll5/2 transition of Et " is observed as group of bands at different relative Raman shifts. [Pg.113]
