Zinc oxide crystal structure

Zincite is usually colored red or orange by manganese impurities. Photographs of zincite are shown in Fig. 1.2. Zinc oxide crystals exhibit several typical surface orientations. The most important surfaces are the (0001) and (0001) (basal plane), (1010) and (1120) (prism planes) and (1121) (pyramidal plane) crystal faces. In principle, the (0001) planes are terminated by Zn atoms only, while the (0001) surfaces are terminated by oxygen atoms only. However, this simple picture does not hold in reality (see description of the surface structure in Sect. 4.2.1 of this book). Nevertheless, the etching behavior is noticeably different for these two surfaces [17] (see also Chap. 8). [Pg.4]

Zinc oxides have diverse applications in various industrial [3] and other types of processes[4-5]. It is essentially a dhydrogenating catalyst on which dehydration can also occur. The catalytic activity of zinc oxide is shown to be correlated to catalyst structure [6], although it is also reported that ZnO catalyst is structure insensitive [2], implying that every surface of exposed zinc oxide is equally active. The ZnO structure is shown to correspond to expanded hexagonal close packing with zinc ions filling half the tetrahedral holes[l], Akhter et al. [7] have identified three natural faces of zinc oxide crystals. [Pg.513]

Virion templates of TMV were also used in combination with different synthetic routes for CdS, PbS, and Fe oxide nanoparticles.Nanoparticle-virion tubules were prepared by reacting a buffered solution of TMV in CdCl2 (pH 7) or TMV in Pb(N03)2 (pH 5) with H2S gas. The formation of metal sulfide nanoparticles occurred over 6 hours as observed by a uniform coating of CdS and PbS nanocrystals on the TMV surface from TEM analysis. Selected area electron diffraction of the mineralized products indicated a zinc blende crystal structure for CdS particles and a rock salt structure for single domain PbS nanocrystals. The iron oxide nanoparticles were mineralized by the TMV templates by the oxidative hydrolysis of an Fe VFe acidic solution with NaOH. Consequendy, a mineral coating of irregular ferrihydrite particles grew on the surface to a thickness of 2 nm. [Pg.5370]

The 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane ligand, [9]aneS3, zinc complex was synthesized to compare with the electrochemistry of related complexes and showed an irreversible oxidation and an irreversible reduction at +1.30 V and —1.77 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium, and the X-ray crystal structure of the bis macrocycle zinc complex was reported.5 0,720... [Pg.1210]

Pendent arm 1,4,7-triazacyclononane macrocycles (91) and (92) have been used to stabilize the zinc-to-phenoxyl bond allowing characterization of these compounds.477 The interest in the zinc complexes comes from the wide potential range in which it is redox stable allowing observation of the ligand-based redox processes, this allows study of the radical by EPR and the electronic spectra is unperturbed by d-d transitions. Macrocycles of the type l,4,7-tris(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,4,7-triazacylononane form a bound phenoxyl radical in a reversible one-electron oxidation of the ligand. The EPR, resonance Raman, electronic spectra, and crystal structure of the phenoxide complexes were reported. This compound can be compared to a zinc complex with a non-coordinated phenoxyl radical as a pendent from the ligand.735... [Pg.1212]

The electronic microscopy method on the EM-125 (fig. 1) for definition of ZnCFO particles size and characteristic of its surface was applied. Known zinc oxide was chosen as the object of comparison. The electronic photos of powders testify, that new composite and zinc oxide have external similarity under the form of particles, wide range on dispersiveness (0,4-6,0 microns for zinc oxide, fig. la 0,3-6,0 microns for ZnCFO, fig. lb) also contain as crystal as amorphous phases in their structure. [Pg.191]

Fig. 2.1. A lens for high-resolution acoustic microscopy in reflection. The central transparent part is a single crystal of sapphire, with its c-axis accurately parallel to the axis of the cylinder. The sandwich structure at the top is the transducer, with the yellow representing an epitaxially grown layer of zinc oxide between two gold electrodes. The pink shaded areas within the sapphire represent the plane-wavefronts of an acoustic pulse they are refracted at the lens cavity so that they become spherical in the coupling fluid. A lens for use at 2 GHz would have a cavity of radius 40f[Pg.8]

The alcohol dehydrogenases are zinc metalloenzymes of broad specificity. They oxidize a wide range of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones, using NAD+ as a coenzyme (see equation 16.1). The two most studied enzymes are those from yeast and horse liver. The crystal structures... [Pg.241]
