Using data from March (1998a), responders were defined as having a Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) decrease >25% from baseline to end of treatment. The 95% confidence interval (Cl) on an NNT = l/(limits on the Cl of its ARR) = (3 to 14), calculated as ... [Pg.431]

A large multicenter trial with CMI (N = 520), which included 21 centers in two studies, examined the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of CMI up to 300 mg/day (CMI Collaborative Study Group 1991). CMI was significantly more effective than placebo on the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and the National Institute of Mental Health Global Obsessive Compulsive Scale. After 10 weeks of treatment, 58% of patients treated with CMI rated themselves much or very much improved versus only 3% of patients treated with placebo. [Pg.466]

Both fluvoxamine and sertraline are approved for the treatment of OCD in children and adolescents. Fluvoxamine was proven effective in a 10-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in patients 8 to 17 years of age with OCD ( 149). Dosages in this study were adjusted to a total daily fluvoxamine dose of approximately 100 mg per day over the first 2 weeks using a balanced, twice-daily dosing schedule. After that, the dose was adjusted within a range of 50 to 200 mg per day based on clinical assessment of efficacy and tolerability. Fluvoxamine was superior to placebo on the Children s Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) at weeks 1 to 6 and week 10. However, the effect was mainly in the 8- to 11-year-old versus the 12- to 17-year-old age group. The significance of this age difference is not known. [Pg.281]

In 23 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder who had not responded to a 6-month course of fluvoxamine (300 mg/day), olanzapine (5 mg/day) was added in an open comparison (28). There was a significant reduction in the mean score on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale concomitant schizotypal personality disorder was the only factor significantly associated with a response. The most common adverse effects were mild to moderate weight gain and sedation. [Pg.302]

Using 18 g/day of inositol, versus placebo, a double blind,2 and crossover study was performed on 13 patients for six weeks. The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale3 was used for analysis, and patients taking the inositol had significantly lower scores than those receiving placebo (Fux et al., 1996, 1999). Since inositol appears to be effective in depression, panic disorder and OCD, it has the clinical profile of a serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Higher doses were used in this study compared to the depression and panic disorder studies previously described. Only a small number of patients were used. [Pg.306]

It is important at the outset of therapy to identify and document the specific target symptoms for pharmacotherapy. Rating scales may be used to measure symptom severity, and a baseline determination is indicated if these tools are used (e.g., L eyton Obsessional Inventory, Symptom Check List 90-OC, and the National Institutes of Mental Health Global Scale). The most widely used scale is the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS). ... [Pg.1313]
