Ellen MacArthur, who became the fastest woman circumnavigator in Kingfisher, an 18 m raceboat, utilized carbon fiber/Nomex for hull and deck, Kevlar skinned cfrp frame for the blister cabin, mast and deck spreaders molded in HM cfrp and a cfrp boom, emphasizing the advantages of mixed construction. [Pg.987]

The 38 m long catamaran PlayStation set a new world record from Miami to New York, with hulls and beams constructed from cfrp/Al honeycomb and a carbon fiber mast, which [Pg.987]

Reputedly the tallest mast (53.33 m) in sailing history was fabricated in two halves by the Consolidated Yacht company for the Zeus super yacht, using carbon/epoxy prepreg, vacuum bagged and cured in a special oven tailormade from foil insulated polyurethane [Pg.987]

The D-shaped fenders of Swedish and Danish Lifeboat Rescue Institutions have been made from shaped foam reinforced with layers of carbon fiber and coated with a polyurethane elastomer, providing buoyancy and stabihty and also deflecting the waves, thereby enhancing visibility. [Pg.989]

Hall Spars use heat cured prepreg products and claim that autoclave curing is superior to vacuum bag curing for the manufacture of carbon fiber spars, enabhng pressures of up to seven times the effective pressure of vacuum bagging to be used. Since a carbon rig is lighter than an A1 mast extrusion, its pitching moment is reduced and it also pumps less in a seaway. [Pg.989]

Artefacts Screwdrivers dismantled spark plug PVC yachting anorak, polymer rope, etc. [Pg.290]

The toughness of wood is important in design for exactly the same reasons that that of steel is it determines whether a structure (a frame building, a pit prop, the mast of a yacht) will fail suddenly and unexpectedly by the propagation of a fast crack. In a steel structure the initial crack is that of a defective weld, or is formed by corrosion or fatigue in a wooden structure the initial defect may be a knot, or a saw cut, or cell damage caused by severe mishandling. [Pg.284]

While detailed discussion of the merits of PEN fibres is largely outside the scope of this book mention may be made of the success in preliminary trials of (yacht) sailcloths made from PEN fibre. PEN fibres have a modulus roughly 2.5 X that of PET, exhibit excellent flex life and also show very good UV resistance. It is understood that the one yacht fitted with PEN sailcloth in the 1996 Olympics won the gold medal in its event. [Pg.724]

If, in the racing yacht example, the following state and control variables are defined X = ye(l), X2 = tpeiO, 3 = then the performance index could be expressed... [Pg.274]

Yachtfarbe, /. yacht paint, racing paint. Yamwurzel, /. yam. [Pg.521]

C19-0088. Using standard potentials, explain why the steel propeller of an ocean-going yacht has a zinc collar. [Pg.1421]

Epoxy-silica hybrids are well known for their abrasion resistance and low thermal expansion due to the presence of nanostructured bi-continuous domains. Most recently they have entered the market as anticorrosion coatings in the marine held, for yachts and for large metal vessels, such as oil tankers, and in particular for cargo or ballast tanks and on hulls (Figure 4.9). [Pg.89]

The following passages detail two very different perspectives of life aboard a ship in the age of sail. The first passage describes an English pleasure yacht in the early 1800s. The second passage recounts a young boy s impressions of the first time he set sail in a merchant vessel. [Pg.231]

What do the yacht in Passage 1 and the Alba in Passage 2 have in common ... [Pg.234]

The yacht may be bigger and faster than the Alba, and the Alba may carry only crew, but these facts are never mentioned in the texts so we can t know for sure. That leaves only one possible answer choice d. The yacht is most certainly more luxurious than the Alba, and this statement is backed by both narrators s descriptions of the their respective vessels. [Pg.243]

The various types of fuel cells are at somewhat different stages in the technology cycle the MCFC is ready for market introduction but faces the typical problem of a new technology, i.e., is expensive because of the lack of economies of scale for its production and the lower cost of its technical rivals (engine-driven co-generation and microturbines). From the technical point of view, the phase of euphoria has almost passed for PEMs and SOFCs and further R D activities are necessary for these two types to match the technical performance of their competitors or the necessary cost level for fuel cells to be technologically and economically ripe for the market. Only the DMFC has reached a standard that allows its use in niche markets, like caravans or yachts, despite poor efficiency levels. [Pg.367]

Finally, glass-reinforced unsaturated polyesters are well known as building materials for boats, yachts and cars and generally termed fibre-glass resin . The preparation, properties and applications of these unsaturated polyesters are summarized in Chapter 21, while the chemistry and properties of a new unsaturated polyester resin for fibre-reinforced composite materials are discussed in Chapter 22. [Pg.1]
