Cobalt bromide is used as a catalyst in the technology of production of arylcarboxylic acids by the oxidation of methylaromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, p-xylene, o-xylene, polymethyl-benzenes). A cobalt bromide catalyst is a mixture of cobaltous and bromide salts in the presence of which hydrocarbons are oxidized with dioxygen. Acetic acid or a mixture of carboxylic acids serves as the solvent. The catalyst was discovered as early as in the 1950s, and the mechanism of catalysis was studied by many researchers [195-214],... [Pg.408]

An aromatic hydrocarbon feedstock consisting mainly of m-xylene is to be isomerised catalytically in a process for the production of / -xylene. The product from the reactor consists of a mixture of p-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene and ethylbenzene. As part of a preliminary assessment of the process, calculate the composition of this mixture if equilibrium were established over the catalyst at 730 K. [Pg.253]

Both human and animal data suggest that mixed xylene, wz-xylene, o-xylene, and p-xylene all produce similar effects, although the potency with regard to a given effect may vary with individual isomers. In mice the 6-hour LC50 values for m-, 0-, andp-xylene were determined to be 5267,4595, and 3907ppm, respectively. The 4-hour LCso value for mixed xylene in rats ranged from 63 50-6700 pm. [Pg.744]

In most columns, two peaks will be observed, coeluting m- and />-xylene, followed by o-xylene m- and/>-isomers mostly coelute. Separation of these two isomers may be achieved to some degree by using a narrow bore capillary column of 100 m length. Under such conditions, />-isomer should elute before m-xylene o-xylene shows a longer retention time and may be readily separated from its other isomers. [Pg.405]

In the case of the measurement of the diffusivity in the p-xylene + o-xylene counterdiffusion experiment, the sample was initially saturated with a stream of p-xylene at a partial pressure of 6.7 Pa then, to this stream of carrier gas plus p-xylene, the carrier gas saturated with o-xylene was admitted, to finally obtain the same partial pressure, 6.7 Pa, for both hydrocarbons. The composition of the final hydrocarbon mixture, that is, the gas phase concentration of p-(cp x) and o-(c0.x) xylene, obtained was checked with a gas chromatograph (FISONS 8000) coupled to the gas outlet of the IR cell (see Figure 5.34). The gas phase concentration, for p-(cp x) and o-xylene (c x) in the fed mixture of the counterdiffusion experiment was the same cp x [%] = c0 x [%] = 50 [%] [90], If Figure 5.34, the uptake curves corresponding to the counterdiffusion kinetics of para + ortho xylene in H-ZSM-11 at 375 K and 400 K are shown [90],... [Pg.271]

In Table 5.5, the effective diffusivity, De, for p-xylene plus o-xylene counterdiffusion in H-SSZ-24 and H-ZSM-11 zeolites at different temperatures and a concentration relation, cp x [%] = c x [%] = 50 [%], are reported [90], It is evident that the kinetics is governed by ordinary diffusion. Additionally, the study of the counterdiffusion of p-xylene + o-xylene and the reverse case o-xylene + p-xylene in a zeolite with a 10 member ring plus 12 member ring interconnected channel-like CIT-1 gives experimental evidence for the existence of molecular traffic control [125],... [Pg.271]

The mixture of aromatics is typically referred to as BTX and is an abbreviation for benzene, toluene, and xylene. The first two components, benzene and toluene, usually are separated by distillation, and the isomers of the third component, xylene, are separated by partial crystallization.17 Benzene is the starting chemical for materials such as styrene, phenol, and many fibers and plastics. Toluene is used to make a number of chemicals, but most is blended into gasoline. Xylene usage is dependent on its isomer. Para-xylene (p-xylene) is a precursor compound for polyester. Ortho-xylene (o-xylene) is the building block for phthalic anhydride. Both compounds are widely used to manufacture consumer products. [Pg.822]
