X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy

Thus, it becomes possible to obtain supported Rh catalysts containing very small Rh particles. In samples of Rh(T0A)/y-Al203 (1% (w/w)) the Rh particle sizes are around 1.1 nm, as indicated by HRTEM analysis (Figure 8). EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Spectroscopy) studies performed on the same samples give 0.7-1.0 nm as a better estimate of the value [24]. It is noteworthy that the... [Pg.446]

For bulk structural detemiination (see chapter B 1.9). the main teclmique used has been x-ray diffraction (XRD). Several other teclmiques are also available for more specialized applications, including electron diffraction (ED) for thin film structures and gas-phase molecules neutron diffraction (ND) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for magnetic studies (see chapter B1.12 and chapter B1.13) x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) for local structures in small or unstable samples and other spectroscopies to examine local structures in molecules. Electron microscopy also plays an important role, primarily tlirough unaging (see chapter B1.17). [Pg.1751]

Acronyms abound in phofoelecfron and relafed specfroscopies buf we shall use only XPS, UPS and, in Sections 8.2 and 8.3, AES (Auger elecfron specfroscopy), XRF (X-ray fluorescence) and EXAFS (exfended X-ray absorption fine sfmcfure). In addition, ESCA is worth mentioning, briefly. If sfands for elecfron specfroscopy for chemical analysis in which elecfron specfroscopy refers fo fhe various branches of specfroscopy which involve fhe ejection of an elecfron from an atom or molecule. Flowever, because ESCA was an acronym infroduced by workers in fhe field of XPS if is mosf often used to refer to XPS rather than to electron spectroscopy in general. [Pg.290]

Near edge x-ray absorption fine stmcture spectroscopy (nexafs) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (xps) have been used to study SAMs of OTS, octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS), CH2(CH2) ySi(OCH2)3, and (17-aminoheptadecyl)-trimethoxysilane (AHTMS), H2N(CH2) ySi(OCH3)3 (149). A number of important observations have been reported. First, the chains in OTS SAMs are practicaUy perpendicular to the substrate surface (tilt angle... [Pg.537]

EXAFS is part of the field of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in which a number of acronyms abound. An X-ray absorption spectrum contains EXAFS data as well as the X-ray absorption near-edge structure, XANES (alternatively called the near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, NEXAFS). The combination of XANES (NEXAFS) and EXAFS is commonly referred to as X-ray absorption fine structure, or XAFS. In applications of EXAFS to surface science, the acronym SEXAFS, for surface-EXAFS, is used. The principles and analysis of EXAFS and SEXAFS are the same. See the article following this one for a discussion of SEXAFS and NEXAFS. [Pg.215]

X-ray absorption spectroscopy combining x-ray absorption near edge fine structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was used to extensively characterize Pt on Cabosll catalysts. XANES Is the result of electron transitions to bound states of the absorbing atom and thereby maps the symmetry - selected empty manifold of electron states. It Is sensitive to the electronic configuration of the absorbing atom. When the photoelectron has sufficient kinetic energy to be ejected from the atom It can be backscattered by neighboring atoms. The quantum Interference of the Initial... [Pg.280]

In the present study, we synthesized in zeolite cavities Co-Mo binary sulfide clusters by using Co and Mo carbonyls and characterized the clusters by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The mechanism of catalytic synergy generation in HDS is discussed. [Pg.503]

Intermediates were also observed in the synthesis of a neutral cluster, Ir4(CO)i2, from Ir(CO)2(acac) in the cages of zeohte NaY these were characterized by IR and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies, the latter being a technique ideally suited to investigation of small, highly dispersed species present in small amoimts in sohds. The spectra indicated dimeric intermediates, possibly Ir2(CO)8 [ 16], when the reaction was carried out in the near absence of water in the zeohte in contrast, the reaction in the dehydrated zeolite was faster, and no evidence of intermediates was observed [16]. [Pg.215]

Linear absorption measurements can therefore give the first indication of possible alloy formation. Nevertheless, in systems containing transition metals (Pd-Ag, Co-Ni,. ..) such a simple technique is no longer effective as interband transitions completely mask the SPR peak, resulting in a structurless absorption, which hinders any unambiguous identification of the alloy. In such cases, one has to rely on structural techniques like TEM (selected-area electron diffraction, SAED and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, EDS) or EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) to establish alloy formation. [Pg.279]
