The need for a thermally stable, solvent-resistant polymer was met by the use of a Wurtz-Fittig synthesis of polyphenylene sulfide. The need for an impact-resistant clear polymer was fulfilled by the reaction of phosgene and the sodium salt of bisphenol A. Admittedly, polymers of formaldehyde, which are found as a sediment in formalin bottles, was investigated by Nobel Laurate Hermann Staudinger in the 1920 s but this polymer lacked integrity until DuPont and Celanese chemists produced thermally stable, injection moldable polyoxymethylene.

The synthesis of alkylbenzenes may be classified under (a) the Wurtz-Fittig reaction (b) the reduction of aryl aldehydes and ketones and (c) and Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. 

Fittig s Synthesis.—When Kekule brought out his benzene theory the relation between toluene and benzene, the first two members of the homologous series of benzene hydrocarbons, was not known. It was worked out by Fittig and Tollens by means of what is known as the Fittig synthesis, which is based on a reaction exactly analogous to the Wurtz reaction for the synthesis of the homologous members of the aliphatic series of hydrocarbons.

One of the first synthesis of PPP was reported in 1949 by Goldfinger [37] who used a Wurtz-Fittig reaction (Scheme 6.9). Goldfinger obtained a benzene-soluble polymer which had a molecular weight of 2700 500 (DP % 34). The structure was considered to consist of phenyl and quinoid groups linked in the para position. This latter point was not proved and is in contradiction to the observed solubility, which does not indicate an all-para-linked polymer. 

The apphcation of monoiodothiophene for the synthesis of alkylthiophenes by Wurtz-Fittig reaction was later described, again by Meyer [77] thus treatment of iodothiophene with alkyl bromides in dry ether in the presence of sodium led to the synthesis of 2-methylthiophene (already isolated from coal tar) and 2-ethyl-, 2-n-propyl and 2- -butylthiophenes. The synthesis of diiodothiophene was also described in the same paper, albeit without any applications.
