Worm hole

For example, unsatisfactory equipment design has caused inlet-end erosion due to improper distribution of water in the water box. Poor design and construction practices have caused erosion-corrosion of the tube sheet due to unsatisfactory water distribution or leakage past pass partitions. Deep channels (wire drawing) or worm holes have been observed in tube holes due to leaking tube-to-tube sheet joints. [Pg.246]

General description. Porosity refers to cavities formed within the weld metal during the solidification process. Such cavities may form due to decreased solubility of a gas as the molten weld metal cools or due to gas-producing chemical reactions within the weld metal itself. At times, cavities can form a continuous channel through the weld metal (worm holes, piping), resulting in leaks (Case History 15.3). [Pg.337]

Locations. Worm holes or piping may affect welded tube-to-tubesheet joints. [Pg.337]

Two cases of initially undamaged reservoirs have been selected for proper validation of modeling equations. From pressure and rate data recorded all along their treatment, the skin variations during acid attack are derived according to a recently published methodology. Their analysis validates the proposed model. This would mean that worm-holes in reservoirs do scale up with laboratory ones according to the proposed law. [Pg.607]

That s the problem, and why we might never be able to use a worm-hole. We d need a device that spews out something called exotic matter. [Pg.66]

Our synthesis is based on the hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide (TEOS Si(OCH2CH3)4) in a diluted solution of nonionic polyethylene oxide-based surfactants. The hydrolysis is then induced by the addition of a small amount of sodium fluoride [5], Depending on the initial mixing conditions, the size of the solubilized objects leads to either a colorless or milky emulsion. Small particles ( 300 nm) with a 3D worm-hole porous structure or small hollow spheres with mesoporous walls, are usually obtained [6]. The synthesis we report herein after exhibits an apparently slight but actually drastic change in the preparation conditions. The main feature of this approach is an intermediate step that utilizes a mild acidity (pH 2 - 4), in which, prior to the reaction, a stable colorless microemulsion containing all reactants is... [Pg.31]

The structure of M41S-type materials is built up of pores with amorphous walls that are formed around micelles of templating material (surfactants). One of the extreme structures of M41S-type materials (MCM-41) is a hexagonal ordering of the pores, an other extreme is a worm-hole disordered type of arrangement of the pores. A lamellar layered structure is another form in which these type of materials often (partially) appear, but this phase collapses to amorphous material upon removal of the surfactant (eg by calcination). A cubic ordering of the pores is also encountered. This form has been named MCM-48 and will not be discussed in the current paper. [Pg.535]

This makes sense when from TEM we can see (figure 5, right) that the mesoporous material forms hollow spheres with walls made of the expected 3D worm-hole porous framework characteristic of MSU materials. During the nitrogen adsorption step, nitrogen can condense into these spheres but it will not be allowed to desorb until the pressure reaches the desorption step for the porous walls (ie below p/p0 = 0.42). [Pg.539]

Here we are then enjoying the temporary expansion of space and time in which all our chemistry can occur and in which evolution has occurred by the laws of chemistry. The space between galaxies is not empty (virtual particles can appear in a vacuum), and it appears not to be unstructured, and the physicists are speaking about a worm-hole configuration whereas anyone with a sense of esthetics would have wished they had thought of Swiss cheese to go along with quarks (Farmers cheese in German) which appear to be the fundamental particles of matter. But no such luck, our life has developed in wormholes if they will be confirmed. Terms like this have a tendency to... [Pg.5]

Mouldings made in this way have relatively rough surfaces (caused by the escaping gas) but in some applications this can be turned to advantage. If the components are intended as replacements for wood they can be grained and printed after moulding and even (if desired) have worm holes included. [Pg.148]

Dissolution of the rock matrix does not occur in a uniform radial manner. Because of permeability contrasts in the reservoir, dominant flow channels called worm holes can develop and extend into the formation in a random fashion. The productivity increase of any well is then governed by worm-hole direction and distance. The longer the worm hole, the better will be the result. [Pg.288]

Leak-off or loss of acid through the walls of worm holes often results in worm holes being too short to provide significant productivity increase. Therefore, effective stimulation often requires retardation of the mineral dissolution rate. The use of microemulsions is one method to accomplish this retardation. The hydrochloric acid is injected as an water-in-oil microemulsion. The diffusion rate of the dispersed aqueous acid to the rock surface is slower than molecular diffusion of acid from a totally aqueous system. Thus the rate of limestone dissolution is retarded with the microemulsion system. [Pg.288]

Suddenly clouds obscured her vision and a wiggling, undulating worm hole made of cloud opened up between the Moon and ourselves. Marc and I both felt we were about to be sucked up by the Moon, so we increased our gravity ( ) to stay down, and eventually the sky returned to normal. I still wonder what would have happened if we hadn t grounded ourselves. [Pg.267]

Kinetics may play an important role in pesticide adsorption (28, 39). Rapid transport of pesticide in large soil pores (rocks, void root channels, worm holes, etc.) could take place, thus exposing the pesticide to only a fraction of the adsorption sites. Since the organic matter content decreases with depth, the occurrence of macropore flow could result in pesticide movement beyond the surface layers where most of the CM resides. [Pg.28]

The Arbegast model can be used to explain two of the more common weld defects in terms of the processing parameters. The first is a worm-hole or tunnel defect that runs the length of the weld and is attributed to insufficient forming pressure under the tool shoulder, which prevents the material from consolidating. The second defect is a lack of penetration on the root surface next to the anvil. This can result when the weld tool does not sufficiently penetrate into the metal plates, most likely from atoo short pin tool. [Pg.47]

These fears have developed to the point where some consumers are reported to be deliberately looking for worm holes in apples in the supermarket as a sign of the absence of toxins. [Pg.268]

The texture of the medium relates in a general way to the pore-size distribution, as large particles give rise to large pores between them, and therefore is a major irrfluence on the soil water retention ctrrve. Additionally, the structure of the medium, especially the pervasive-ness of aggregation, shrinkage cracks, worm-holes, etc. substantially influences water retention. [Pg.190]
