In order to analyse the extent of differentiation in decentralised local activation policies, a second small exploratory study, a situation analysis, in the three above mentioned Dutch municipalities was carried out by Koning. Vignettes were used amongst frontline workers to get an indication of current Dutch evolving activation policy regarding welfare clients, and the extent to which differences between municipalities arise (Koning 2006, van Lieshout and Koning 2005).

A company s injury history, both the frequency and severity of injuries, is one of the factors determining their workers compensation insurance premiums. Having a revamped safety program will drive down injury rates and, in turn, insurance premiums. But, that is only one of the costs associated with workplace injuries. Others include medical expenses for treatment of the injured and lost productivity. Below are some rather startling findings from a PBS Frontline program based on a University of Michigan Press publication, which examined workplace injury statistics for 1992. 

Because needlestick injuries were a pressing problem, the US. Congress passed the Federal Needlestick Safety Act in 2000. This act not only requires employers to make safer needles available to health care workers but also requires employers to solicit the input of frontline health care workers when making needle purchasing-related decisions.

Because human error is one of the most important causes of accidents for frontline workers, hazard identification activities are undertaken to determine and address the sources of hazards and to increase sensitivity to hazards. Suggested time required for the hazard identification activities are shown in Table 6.2. KYT places importance on equality and the individual perspectives of working people. Hazards are identified by the safety officer and workers on site. By encouraging everybody on site to identify, and resolve safety problems and hazards on site, safety conditions can be improved. The site shows videos depicting risky behaviour, which can motivate workers to work safely.
