Word processing technology

Although the word processing is normally reserved for the method of manufacture of any finished article it is important to recognise that the word can also describe the preparation or synthesis of the material. Thus in the polymer field it can range from improved methods of synthesis of polymers with tailor made properties (see Section 5.5) to improved methods of dispersion or improved methods of extrusion. Typical technological uses are shown in Tab. 5.25. 

Many of the definitions have been adapted from Merriam-Webster s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edn (1993-1998). If a word has several explanations, such as common language and technical meanings, the technical reference is being presented which, in some cases, has been amended by the author to more closely describe its use in mechanical process technology and/or agglomeration.

Predesign Task data, together with data about human and technology availability and performance, are used to (1) define and allocate tasks, (2) develop procedures to accomplish the tasks, and (3) identify the needed human-machine interfaces. Note that the description of a task depends on the technology assumed. For example, a writing task would be accomplished differently with paper and pencil, a manual typewriter, or a computer with word processing software. 

Modern, true 32-bit Windows technology supports safe multitasking, freeing the PC for various other jobs such as word processing and data evaluation during measurement and the interactive spectrometer status display for effective control of the x-ray spectrometer (Fig. 1). 

In 2010, the Haystack group at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed Soylent, a word-processing interface that lets users edit, proof, and shorten their documents using Mechanical Turk workers. 

Pattern recognition technology has become familiar to many consumers. Voice-activated telephones, fingerprint security for personal computers, and character analysis in word-processing software are just a few of the many applications that affect daily life. Advances in medicine, military technology, and economic analysis are further examples of how pattern recognition has come to shape the development of society.
