The value of a wool fleece and its use is largely determined by the diameter of the fibre. Merino is the finest wool with grades ranging from ultrafine (<16.5 rm) to broad wool of >23 rm (Nolan et al., 2013). Other sheep species and crossbreeds have higher diameter fibres with coarser wools (up to 35—45 pm) commonly used for floor coverings. Approximately two-thirds of the global wool harvest is used in the manufacture of apparel, and about one-third in interior products such as carpets, upholstery and rugs, with a small proportion (about 5% of the total) destined for industrial uses such as insulation (IWTO, 2014). 

Production. The inoculum grew vigorously in the rich yeast extract containing media and produced a thick viscous dispersion in the stirred tank bioreactor.
