Wood rots

When water penetrates painted wood, wood rot occurs. The water can come from leaks, inadequately vented space between walls, excessive moisture inside an inadequately vented building, through porous wall paint, or from groundwater absorbed by the wood behind the paint due to the strong capillary action of the wood. Keeping wood at least 6 inches (152.4 mm) above the ground eliminates the source of unwanted water if the wood cannot be cut, the earth should be dug away at least 6 inches below the wood. [Pg.48]

Such unspecific oxidative attack is also discussed as a possible route in the biodegradation fate of PVA. Oxidation of PVA should be possible, as very aggressive oxidative species can be generated by the extracellular enzyme mixtures of wood-rotting fungi. Unspecific oxidative incidents are to be expected when strongly oxidising low molecular mediators react with PVA, a mechanism that is described as the indirect action of laccase enzymes [77]. As Figure 1 depicts, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), which occurs ubiquitously in higher plants and the wood-rotting Basidiomycetes (1-3), seems to play a common central role in the conversion of phenylalanine (by deamination) to a wide variety of secondary metabolites. These include lignins in higher plants (4), veratryl alcohol in the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium (4a), and methyl p-anisate in the brown-rot fungus... [Pg.412]

Because the three-dimensional structures of the peroxidase, its reductant cytochrome c, and the complex of the two (Fig. 16-9) are known, cytochrome c peroxidase is the subject of much experimental study. Other fungal peroxidases, some of which contain manganese rather than iron, act to degrade lignin (Chapter 25).218 A lignin peroxidase from the white wood-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has a surface tryptophan with a specifically hydroxylated C(3 carbon atom which may have a functional role in catalysis.2183 0... [Pg.853]
