Without oxygen

These included Scheele, Cavendish, Priestley, and others. They called it burnt or dephlogisticated air," which meant air without oxygen. [Pg.17]

Combustion of coal and other fuels Gasification of coal, peat, wood wastes Carbonization of coal (decomposition without oxygen)... [Pg.70]

Atmospheric Conditions. In addition to complete combustion, wastes may be destroyed by treatment at high temperatures either without oxygen (qv) (pyrolysis), usiag limited oxygea (partial combustioa), or ia reactive atmospheres (gasiftcatioa), such as those containing steam (qv), hydrogea (qv), or carboa dioxide (qv). [Pg.45]

Both molybdate and orthophosphate are excellent passivators in the presence of oxygen. Molybdate can be an effective inhibitor, especially when combined with other chemicals. Orthophosphate is not really an oxidizer per se but becomes one ia the presence of oxygen. If iron is put iato a phosphate solution without oxygen present, the corrosion potential remains active and the corrosion rate is not reduced. However, if oxygen is present, the corrosion potential iacreases ia the noble direction and the corrosion rate decreases significantly. [Pg.270]

Anoxic Literally "without oxygen." An adjective describing a microbial habitat devoid of oxygen. [Pg.604]

The most commonly used fuels for combustion are hydrocarbons, materials that are compounds of only hydrogen and carbon. Occasionally, fuels such as alcohols, that contain oxygen, are burned. Wlieti hydrocarbon fuels with or without oxygen arc burned in air (combusted) to completion, the products are water, from the hydrogen part of the fuel, and carbon dioxide, from the complete conversion of the carbon part. If oxygen is present m the fuel, it shows up in the final product as part of either the water or carbon dioxide. [Pg.273]

As a consequence, it is not possible to devise a single class of anodic inhibitor formulation that satisfies all water treatment requirements. Rather, there several types of formulations, and some formulators may offer each of these products in different strengths, with or without oxygen scavengers and indicator dyes in their blends. As examples, a nitrite/sUicate formulation and a molybdate/nitrite formulation are provided here ... [Pg.402]

The mode of action of metronidazole (Flagyl) is not well understood, but it is thought to disrupt DNA and protein syndiesis in susceptible organisms. This drug may be used in the treatment of serious infections, such as intraabdominal, bone, soft tissue, lower respiratory, gynecologic, and CNS infections caused by susceptible anaerobic (able to live without oxygen) microorganisms. [Pg.102]

I] Prediction of the temperature where DeNOx can take place, by TPD of NO preadsorbed with or without oxygen. In the absence of oxygen, check the formation of N2, N20, N02 and NO during TPD. If N20 and/or N2 are formed, it means that the reaction already took place. If not, the system needs the reductant to take place. This experiment also means that function 3 can work [10,25],... [Pg.171]

It is very unstable and has been known to decompose spontaneously at ambient temperature with explosive violence. Its complexes (particularly the diethyl ethe-rate) are considerably more stable [1]. The hydride ignites in air with or without oxygen enrichment [2],... [Pg.47]

The compositions of composites are different for primary and rechargeable variants of batteries. In rechargeable variant it is necessary to have considerable mass of PANI for charging of battery without oxygen evolution. In primary variant it is enough to have a relatively small amount of PANI for creation of its quite thin layer at the conductive and stable graphite collector. Thus we have developed two main types of composite materials based on TEG and PANI (Table 4). [Pg.118]

In individuals who took thyroid hormones, 80% of the weight lost was lean body mass (muscle and bone) rather than excess fat. People taking these extracts experienced muscle weakness and bone breakdown, which led to a condition called osteoporosis, in which bones are weakened and the risk of bone fractures or breaks is increased. Thyroid hormone extracts also made the heart work harder by increasing metabolism, which led to problems such as increased heart rate, palpitations, and irregular heartbeat. These problems were potentially life threatening When the heart beats abnormally (or not at all), it is unable to pump blood and oxygen to the brain and body. Individuals die suddenly from this condition because the brain can only function for a few minutes without oxygen and nutrients. [Pg.41]

Hexachloroethane in the air does not break down to other compounds. It gradually escapes into the upper atmosphere. Some hexachloroethane that is in lakes or streams and surface soils will evaporate into the air. Some will be broken down by microscopic organisms. Microbes can break down hexachloroethane more easily without oxygen than with oxygen. That is why hexachloroethane will break down more quickly when it is buried in the soil or trapped in underground water than when it is near the surface. In one study, it took only 4 days for 99% of the hexachloroethane in soil to break down when oxygen was not present. It took 4 weeks when oxygen was present. [Pg.21]

The usual oxidizer in the fire triangle is oxygen in the air. However, gases such as fluorine and chlorine liquids such as peroxides and chlorates and solids such as ammonium nitrate and some metals can serve the role of an oxidizer. Exothermic decomposition, without oxygen, is also possible, e.g., with ethylene oxide or acetylene. [Pg.7]

In our study we used commercial microorganisms mixtures especially suited to utilisation of hydrocarbons. The pure strain of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes No 10086, one of the most effective PCBs congeners degrades was used in experiment to check the process effects in both (with and without oxygen) conditions in presence of waste transformer oil. [Pg.92]

An aqueous solution (pH 6.5) of pyridoxal 5-phosphate (278) was irradiated at 410 nm with oxygen passing for 5 h. Of five spots on TLC, the major products were shown to be the acid (279) and the dimer (280). When high initial concentrations of neutral solutions of pyridoxal 5-phosphate were irradiated without oxygen passing, there were lower yields of (279) and (280) and the major product was the acyloin (281) [172],... [Pg.97]

New photochemical cleavage reactions of ortho-substituted C=C double bonds were reported by introducing a 2-nitrophenyl group to the double bond104. Photolysis of 1-(2-nitrophenyl)-l-alkenes 174 in methylene chloride solution without oxygen affords aryl... [Pg.788]

As can be seen from the data presented, the suspension of crystal C60 did not itself affect the influenza vims. In all control experiments without oxygen and irradiation the infectious activity of the vims remained on the same level throughout the experiment (Fig. 5.1). This was true for both vims in original allantoic fluid and vims resuspended in saline. Exposure of the vims to oxygen without irradiation did not affect the viral titer either. [Pg.111]

Odour will return in treated slurry as a result of post treatment fermentation. The concentration of readily fermentable substrates, measured as BOD5, provide an indicator of this problem. In continuous culture without oxygen limitation the BOD5 can be described by a model derived from the Monod (13) model of microbial growth (14). The supernatant BOD5 (g/1) from treatment at 15 to 45°C, was described by equation 3 and the whole BOD5 by equations 4 and 5(15). [Pg.301]
