Ncurobiological findings are often cited as the explanation of addiction, or at least of aspects of addiction. These findings also pertain to choice-oriented theories, which seem to try to answer the core question, What is addiction Roy Wise and Michael Bozarth (1987) distinguish between... [Pg.141]

The particular constellation of factors in Honauer s case was unusual, recalling the severity of Sommering s condemnation. More typically, alchemical incompetence and the failure to fulfill a contract went hand in hand in other words, when alchemists did not fulfill their contracts, it was usually because they simply could not. Incompetence alone did not necessarily have such severe consequences. Michael Heinrich Wagenmann, for instance, wisely confessed to Duke Friedrich his inability to fulfill to his contract with an honesty that probably saved his life. He admitted that his tincture, which he had purchased from a man from Munich, simply did not appear to work, despite his long hours of labor.27 Unfortunately, because Duke Friedrich s marginal note on Wagenmann s disclosure was... [Pg.156]

We re a sports-crazy country, a nation of fanatic sports fans and celebrity worshippers. We re awed and entertained by the best of them—the Michael Jordans, the Alex Rodriguezes, the Emmitt Smiths. But as much as they may inspire and amuse us, professional athletes do not deserve such high salaries. Those millions could be much more wisely spent. [Pg.146]

Michael Weisberg s water example (Chapter 18) helps to make this point. Ordinary, although purified (but how purified ), water found naturally on the Earth contains typical, percentage-wise predicable isotopic isomers. While most water is composed of ordinary one proton one electron hydrogen, a small percentage is composed of a heavier isotopic isomer of hydrogen one proton-one neutron-one electron, deuterium, or D. We symbolize heavy water, HDO, instead of H20. For many purposes, the water we want to talk about must contain the standard... [Pg.15]

Problem 19.37 brings up a serious practical question. You may well be able to analyze a problem by figuring out the different possible reactions, but choosing among them is more difficult. How do you find the easiest route (there are very often several) to the product you are after Clearly, experience is invaluable and you are by definition short on that commodity. In such a situation, it is wise to be receptive to good advice, and here is a practical hint from one of the best problem solvers known, Ronald M. Magid (b. 1938), in the form of Magid s second rule When there is a choice, always try the Michael first. [Pg.999]
