Wires, catenary

When powered by an electric motor, generally taking power from overhead wires ( catenaries ) such a vehicle is called an electric trolleybus or a trackless trolley. Two trains coming from opposite directions approached the area where the cloud was present. Each consisted of an electrically powered locomotive and 19 coaches constructed of metal and wood. The turbulence of the trains probably mixed up the vapor and mist with overlying air to form a flammable cloud portion. Either train could have ignited the cloud, most likely at catenary wires which powered the locomotives. 

Rail continuity bonds and negative feeders should be regularly inspected and tested, and the insulation to earth of the third rail or overhead catenary wires and the running (return) rails maintained satisfactorily. Track maintenance should include the renewal of sleepers and rail bedding material if necessary. 

Catastrophic corrosion damage to buried structures may occasionally occur as a result of earth leakage faults on d.c. equipment or on traction systems using metallic posts to support overhead catenary wires. Care should be taken when making earth potential measurements because of the high potential gradients that may be present. 

Danger facilities of large dimensions requiring the best possible protection should be provided with a system of catenaries suspended from tall masts. These catenary wires must pass to ground some distance away from the protected structure so that the lightning current may go to ground at a distant point.

Furnaces for vertical strip or strand (wire) do not have a conveyor, per se, because the strip or wire can be pulled over a series of rollers after it has been threaded through the furnace. A catenary furnace is a continuous horizontal furnace most often used for annealing stainless-steel strip. A long, thin load is supported by rollers at the entrance and exit, and therefore hangs in the shape of a catenary curve within the furnace. (See box on page 132 and fig. 4.10.)...
