Among his many honors were election to both the American and Russian Academies of Sciences, the Willard Gibbs Medal of the Chicago Section of the ACS, the Berthelot Medal, the Lenin Prize, and honorary doctor s degrees. Out of the income from a trust fund set up by Dr and Mrs Ipatieff the Ipatieff Prize was established several years ago which would encourage work in the field of catalysis and high pressure... [Pg.397]

During the period 1954 to 1958 Noyes was awarded the Priestly Medal and the Willard Gibbs Medal. He was treasurer and then vice-president of IUPAC. Since he was the only American on the executive committee of IUPAC, he flew to Europe for these meetings. For his convenience they were held on Saturday, so that he could fly to Europe and back over the weekend. Later he was to become President of IUPAC. Earlier, in 1947, he had been president of the American Chemical Society. [Pg.508]

Among the many international honors he received were the Butlerow Prize and the Lavoisier, Berthelot, and Willard Gibbs medals. He was cited by the United States Government for his work on the production of aviation gasoline, which was credited with establishing the air superiority of the Allied Forces. [Pg.498]

In 1911 Arrhenius again visited this country to deliver a series of lectures at our principal universities. He was invited by the Chemists Club of New York to talk to its members on May 17, because on that night, twenty-eight-years ago, he had received the inspirational flash of the true meaning of electrolysis. The Willard Gibbs Medal was presented to him by the American Chemical Society. [Pg.152]

In 1931, Levene was awarded the Willard Gibbs medal of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society as the outstanding American worker in the application of organic chemistry to biological problems. That citation is one which will go unchallenged for many years to come. [Pg.12]

He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Society in 1911, the same year he received the Willard Gibbs Medal of the American Chemical Society. Three years later he was awarded the Faraday Medal of the British Chemical Society. He was also a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the German Chemical Society. [Pg.18]

During his career Debye was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society, London, the Franklin and Faraday Medals, the Lorentz Medal of the Royal Netherlands Academy, the Max Planck Medal (1950), the Willard Gibbs Medal (1949), the Nichols Medal (1961), the Kendall Award (Miami, 1957), and the Priestley Medal of the American Chemical Society... [Pg.71]

He was given many awards and honors including Nichols Medal (1915 and 1920) Hughes Medal (1918) Rumford Medal (1921) Cannizzaro Prize (1925) Perkin Medal (1928) School of Mines Medal (Columbia University, 1929) Chardler Medal (1929) Willard Gibbs Medal (1930) Popular Science Monthly Award (1932) Franklin Medal and Holly Medal (1934) John Scott Award (1937) Modern Pioneer of Industry (1940) Faraday Medal (1944) and Mascart Medal (1950). He was a foreign member of the Royal Society of London, a fellow of the American Physical Society, and an honorary member of the British Institute of Metals and the Chemical Society (London). He served as president of the American Chemical Society and as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received over a dozen honorary degrees. [Pg.160]

He also received the Research Corporation Award for 1951 for the radiocarbon dating technique the Chandler Medal of Columbia University for outstanding achievement in the field of chemistry (1954) the American Chemical Society Award for Nuclear Applications in Chemistry (1956) the Elliott Cresson Medal of the Franklin Institute (1957) the American Chemical Society s Willard Gibbs Medal Award (1958) the Albert Einstein Medal Award (1959) and the Day Medal of the Geological Society of America (1961). [Pg.164]

In the short period between 1935 and 1939 Ipatieff coauthored over 50 research papers, and applied for dozens of patents. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and received the coveted Willard Gibbs medal, and his achievements did not go unnoticed in his native land. In 1937, when he refused invitations of Stalin to return to Russia, he was expelled from the Russian Academy of Sciences and deprived of his Soviet citizenship. His son, a professor of chemistry at the Moscow University, was made to denounce his father in a public meeting, and Ipatieff s name was no longer cited in Russian chemical literature. [Pg.31]

The medals, awards and honorary degrees accorded to Dr. Mark are so numerous that I am not able to record them in this brief testimony. They come from many countries, organizations and societies. They span more than four decades. In 1928, Dr. Mark was awarded the Heinrich Hertz Medal. This year our Geheimrat will receive the prestigious Willard Gibbs Medal of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society. [Pg.35]

He is the recipient of the Nichols Medal, Willard Gibbs Medal, American Institute of Chemists Gold Medal, Priestley Medal, SPE International Award, Witco Award, Perkin Medal, Madison Marshall Award, American Institute of Chemists Pioneer Award, John Kuebler Award, and Borden Award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences as well as the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. Speed has received honorary degrees from the Illinois Wesleyan University, University of Illinois, and the University of Louvain. [Pg.349]

The liquid-phase cracking processes were the first to be commercially applied, and the Burton process was the first to be practiced on a large scale. Development began in 1910 a patent was issued in 1912 recognition of Dr. Burton by the Willard Gibbs Medal was given in 1918 and by 1921 over 800 Burton stills were said to be in operation. Other early liquid-phase processes were the Fleming, Isom, and Emerson processes. [Pg.2]
