Whole periodate oxidation

Table I shows the results of periodate oxidation and methylation applied to amylopectins from various sources. If the percentage of amylose in a whole starch is known, the length of unit chain of the amylopectin component can be calculated from the results of periodate oxidation of the whole starch (see Table II). The length of unit chain appears to depend on the botanical species, but not the variety, from which the starch wras isolated. In the case of tapioca and corn amylopectins, sub-fractionation of these by precipitation with methanol, followed by periodate oxidation, showed the sub-fractions had the same degree of branching as the original amylopectins.71 The action of periodate on whole starches and amylopectins is now so well established and accurate, that it may well completely supersede the methylation technique for pure starches, in view of its many advantages. Many studies aimed at structural elucidation of palytoxin have included data derived from NMR determinations on various degradation products from periodate oxidation or ozonolysis (Moore and Bartolini 1981 Cha et al. 1982 Moore et al. 1982a). The complete chemical shift assigmnent of H and NMR signals of the whole P. tuberculosa palytoxin molecule was reported by Kan et al. (2001 Table 5.1). A detailed description of NMR spectra is beyond the purpose of this chapter. However, it is interesting to note that deuterated methanol (CDjOD or CDjOH) gave much sharper... [Pg.80]

Bl-2, Bl-3 and Bl-4 was purified by anion-exchanged chromatography and their structures have been determined by MALDI-TOF-MS and NMR spectroscopy analyses of the whole molecules, combined with methylation analysis, periodate oxidation, acid and enzymatic hydrolysis. From these data, four structures were proposed (Table 3). [Pg.1043]

Fluorine has the strongest electronegativity and is the strongest oxidizing element on the whole periodic table. Fluorine is found naturally in the mineral fluorspar (CaF2) and the mineral fluorapatite (Ca5(PO )2F). Fluorine is chiefly prepared by electrolysis of potassium fluoride that is first dissolved in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. [Pg.201]

Throughout the whole period of discovery, the first three decades of the 19 century, vanadium minerals had been found and vanadium compounds been prepared. The metal itself, however, had not been isolated. BerzeHus showed early that it was impossible to prepare vanadium metal by reduction of the oxide with carbon. This gave vanadium carbide. Nor did reduction with metaUic potassium give the pure metal. [Pg.542]

Various compounds such as thiobisphenol were reported to exhibit a pro-oxidant effect in the early period of polyethylene photooxidation, which is accelerated as their concentration is enhanced, while on the later irradiation period the carbonyl build up was retarded [72]. The retardation of the carbonyl accumulation was obtained with a compound based on dodecyl-3,3 -thiodipropionate over the whole period of ultraviolet exposure. Kinetic data showed [72] that the concentration of 0.1 w/w% of thiobisphenols determines the most effective retardation for flie accumulation of carbonyl group in LDPE films. [Pg.182]

According to Vpl nov, the historical development of inorganic peroxide chemistry can be divided into four periods. The fust period, from 1818 (Thenard s synthesis of H202) to 1869 (the formulation of the Periodic Table by D.I. Mendele eff) is characterized by the wide-ranging investigations conducted by Thenard and his co-workers concerning the reaction of oxidized water which resulted in the development of a whole series of peroxide derivs as well as a more precise determination of the structure of Na peroxide... [Pg.662]

After administration of C-labeUed hydrogencarbonate, the CO2 rapidly equilibrates with the CO2 in the whole body. Since the urea produced in the hver is in isotopic equihbrium with the CO2 produced from the oxidation of fuels, changes in the radioactivity in urea in the urine can be used to measure the rate of CO2 production and hence the rate of fuel oxidation. An advantage of the technique is that it is accurate over relatively short periods (e.g. 24 hours). [Pg.23]
