Wettability detergency

Often a phosphorus-containing surfactant provides the combination of desired characteristics, e.g., wettability, detergency, and anticorrosiveness. Thus classification by discriminate application is difficult. The following structure only serves the purpose of a better survey. The limits between specific sections are hazy, and as a result the mentioned surfactants encompass more than one characteristic.

In general, grafting of hydrophillic monomers have been found to lead to an increase in wettability, adhesion, dyeing, and rate of release of oil stains by detergent solution. On the other hand, if the monomer is hydro-phobic, the result will be decreased wetting by all liquids including oil stains. If grafting is not restricted to surface alone but encompasses the bulk of the backbone polymer, then the properties such as flame resistance, water sorption, crease resistance, etc. will be affected.

Wettability of a solid surface definition and assessment The concept of wettability of a solid by a liquid is directly related to the wetting processes. This concept is specially useful in the fields of detergency, lubrication or enhanced oil recovery. In the context of the oil industry, proposals were made by Briant and Cuiec (1972) for the experimental assessment of wettability, which was defined in terms of the thermodynamic affinity of a solid surface for a liquid.
