Then, the weld depths penetration are controlled in a pulse-echo configuration because the weld bead (of width 2 mm) disturbs the detection when the pump and the probe beams are shifted of 2.2 mm. The results are presented in figure 8 (identical experimental parameters as in figure 7). The slow propagation velocities for gold-nickel alloy involve that the thermal component does not overlap the ultrasonic components, in particular for the echo due to the interaction with a lack of weld penetration. The acoustic response (V shape) is still well observed both for the slot of height 1.7 mm and for a weld depth penetration of 0.8 mm (lack of weld penetration of 1.7 mm), even with the weld bead. This is hopeful with regard to the difficulties encountered by conventional ultrasound in the case of the weld depths penetration. [Pg.698]

Second, apart from a different mode of activation, different modes of reactivity are observed. Hence, for FeCls reactions like oxidative C-C but also nonoxidative C-C couplings are as well observed as bond formation via Lewis-acid activation (Scheme 2) [11-16]. Depending on the reaction type, one or more mechanistic pathways are accessible at the same time, which makes it difficult to shed light into mechanistic details. [Pg.3]

To our benefit, fluorescence is a well-observed phenomenon characteristic for many materials. This allows providing broad selection of fluorescence reporters that have to be chosen according to different criteria high molar absorbance and fluorescence quantum yield, convenient wavelengths of excitation and emission, high chemical stability, and photostability. They are well-described in other chapters of this book and in other books of these series. As we will see subsequently, they should be adapted to particular technique of target detection and to particular method of observation of fluorescence response, which needs establishing additional criteria for their selection. [Pg.6]

I-Solenoid repeats usually have several x or x x sequence patterns that correspond to the /1-strands (here, denotes an apolar residue, and x is mostly polar but can be any residue except pro line). The middle -position in x x usually has a bulky apolar residue, while -residues in positions close to turns are often alanine, glycine, serine, or threonine. These positions are also occupied by asparagine residues that stack to form H-bonded ladders inside the /1-solenoid. The strand-associated x and x x patterns are interrupted by regions enriched in polar residues and glycine (Hennetin et al., 2006). These are regions of turns and loops. The long loops frequently contain proline residues. In several /1-solenoids, the alternation of apolar and polar residues that is typical for /1-strands is not well observed and outside positions are occupied by apolar residues. [Pg.75]

Fluorescence is a well-observed phenomenon characteristic of many materials and the different forms of their aggregation. Meantime the vast majority of studies on fluorescence have been on small organic molecules in liquid solutions. Parameters of their emission (intensity, lifetime, anisotropy, and positions of excitation and emission spectra) were found to be extremely sensitive to intermolecular interactions [1], which justifies their extensive application in various sensing technologies... [Pg.108]

When the relation between then nonradiative decay processes and the concentration or value of the parameter of interest k A[Parameter]) is not linear (e.g., Eqs. (9.13 and 9.14), the intensity ratio of Eq. (9.31) introduces the well-observed problem of curvature in the Stem-Volmer plot (see Fig. 9.3). [Pg.263]

It is a well-observed phenomenon that adsorbates suppress the strongly adsorbed hydrogen peaks (180 350 mV) more than the weakly adsorbed hydrogen peaks (60 -180 mV) as shown in the voltammograms in Fig. 3-16. Because this phenomenon is not found in the adsorption of COad. [Pg.144]

A second cause of irreproducibility is not maintaining constant flow or rotation rate during analysis. Since convection is such an efficient form of mass transport, small variations in cu or Vf can cause /um to vary greatly. The variation in flux caused by a poor-quality pump can be negated if the solution is delivered from a well-observed constant-head tank. Vigilance is recommended in the absence of computer feedback systems,. [Pg.235]

The case of boron as a network former cation is somewhat specific in that this element has no available d orbitals. However, a p orbital is available when the boron has a coordination number of 3, which allows stabilisation of an electronic doublet of the oxygen or sulphur introduced by the modifier. This oxygen or sulphur giving up a doublet to another boron atom increases the cross-linking by the formation of two BO4 tetrahedra. In hybridisation terms, the boron is altered from the sp configuration to the sp configuration. The coordination change of boron has been especially well observed by NMR (Bray and O Keefe, 1963 Muller-Warmuth and Eckert, 1982). [Pg.78]

In water-suppressed muscle spectra, contributions of lipids, methyl and methylene groups of creatine (Crs, Cr2), trimethylammonium-containing compounds (TMA), including signals from carnitine (Ct), choline (Cho), and taurine (Tau) are well observable as demonstrated in Fig. 15. Furthermore, small signals of histidine protons of carnosine (Cs) can be sometimes identified... [Pg.20]

All four terms have been observed empirically. Terms 1-3 are well known, and term 4 has been observed as a magnetization in europium ion doped glasses by van der Ziel et al. [37] as argued already. The RFR term therefore emerges self-consistently with three other well-known and well-observed terms from what is effectively the 0(3) covariant derivative. [Pg.132]

A. In the investigation of causes, we must begin by phenomena sufficiently varied, and well observed and proceed in order from proximate causes to the more remote. [Pg.446]

The supression of the microscopic defect segregation by strong diffusion is well-observed for d = 3 - see Fig. 7.6. The main effect is seen for the correlation function of similar (rather than dissimilar) defects. At last, a comparison of Figs 7.7 and 7.4 demonstrates an effect of the diffusion upon... [Pg.413]

Modern brass and bronze alloys come in many different compositions, but 2 1 ratios of copper and zinc or tin respectively are used in a number of applications. Ancient and medieval alloys that are called brass and bronze are often mixtures of all three elements, with several other elements present as well. Observing a clean composition of copper and zinc or of copper and tin in any of the samples in this study would be a good indicator of a modem, counterfeit coin. None with such a composition were found. [Pg.233]

External Characters.— The colour, clearness and smell are noted. A yellowish colour indicates a poorly rectified or old or adulterated product (especially one containing crude pine oil). Turbidity or opalescence indicates the presence of suspended impurities, particularly water. The smell, which is well observed by rubbing a little of the oil between the hands, may indicate the presence of mineral or tar oils, etc. [Pg.301]

It is worth noting that the softening of the polymer medium, resulting from hydrogen bond breakdown due to ft transition motions, is well observed in the temperature dependence of the modulus, E, of xTyli-y copolyamides (shown in Fig. 84a). [Pg.329]

Toropov et al.76-79 developed QSPR models for the complexes of nine alkaline-earth and transition metals with some amino acids, phosphate derivatives of adenosine, and heterocyclic compounds based on topological indices. Although the numbers of examples in the datasets were big enough, 11076 and 150,79 they involved only a few different ligands (17 and 25 molecules, respectively). The validation calculations were performed on the test sets containing the same ligands as in the training sets, which could explain the well observed performance of the predictions.7679... [Pg.339]

The high-temperature relaxation process is typical for amorphous polymers and can be assigned to the a-relaxation that appears in the whole frequency range and in the temperature interval from 50 to 100°C. This process is well observed for all samples. It corresponds to the glass-rubber transition of the amorphous phase. [Pg.565]

One can therefore predict the expected scaling of the luminosity-temperature relation, a well observed quantity ... [Pg.64]

Metabolic Transit of 14C-Lysinoalanine in Other Species. In mice and in hamsters, the metabolic transit of lysinoalanine is not very different from that of rats except in the composition of some urinary catabolites (113) and the level of the radioactivity remaining in the kidneys (see Table VIII). In quails the feces contained small amounts of lysinoalanine (6-15%) and only two important catabolites. The urines of mice and hamsters contained two catabolites less than those of rats (see Figure 5), and although mice and hamsters do not develop nephrocytomegaly, they presented the same kind of retention of radioactivity in the kidney cells as rats. This retention in the medular part of the kidneys is well observed on the whole-body autoradiographies of Figure 2 however, in mice and hamsters, this retention is quantitatively less important than in rats (see Table VIII). [Pg.116]
