Welding responsibilities/procedures

Weld inspection duties of personnel responsible for judging the quahty of welding with regard to specifications have been treated (15). Some of these duties involve the visual inspection of welds to determine if they are of the proper size, location, and type and are free of defects. Specifications of materials used must be checked, as must equipment and procedures. 

The vendor shall be responsible for the review of all repairs and repair welds to ensure they are properly heat treated and nondestructively examined for soundness and compliance with the applicable qualified procedures (see 2.11.1.6). Repair welds shall be nondestructively tested by the same method used to originally qualify the part. 

This type of cracking often occurs some time after welding has been completed and, although extensive, may be difficult to detect. Thus a heavy responsibility is placed on the fabricator to match the welding procedure with the material for each application so that cracking does not occur. The American Welding Society (AWS) Board of Directors has adopted a policy whereby all official interpretations of AWS standards are handled in a formal manner. Under this policy, all interpretations are made by the committee that is responsible for the standard. Official communication concerning an interpretation is directed through the AWS staff member who works with that committee. The policy requires that all requests for an interpretation be submitted in writing. Such requests will be handled as expeditiously as possible, but due to the complexity of the work and the procedures that must be followed, some interpretations may require considerable time.

The individual in responsible charge must inspect the area(s) where hot work (e.g., welding or cutting operations), use of spark-producing power tools, and chipping operations are conducted to be sure that it is safe for the work to be done and that safe procedures will be followed for the work specified.
