Since twin screw extruders have become an important segment of the field of extrusion it is reasonable to discuss important aspects of commercial twin screw machinery. A good reference on capabilities of twin screw extruders is the book edited by David Todd [43]. In this book, some of the main suppliers of twin screw extruders describe their machinery and capabilities the companies are Leistritz, Werner Pfleiderer, Berstorff, APV (Baker Perkins), Japan Steel Works, Welding Engineers, Parrel, and Buss. The book describes both co- and counter-rotating twin screw extruders and internal mixers. Another good reference on twin screw extruders is the book by James White [44]. The in-line molding has been demonstrated at Georgia Tech. A 30 mm twin screw extruder from NFM Welding Engineers was used to melt PCC, add 25 mm glass fibers, vent volatiles and extrude a 25 mm-diameter hot log. The hot log was cut at regular time intervals, folded and immediately compression molded into... 

In the United States Welding Engineers, Cincinnati Milacron, APV Chemical Machinery, carried out work on development of multi-screw extmders. An excellent review of the early development of twin-screw extmsion technology was published by White [1990,1992]. A short summary on mixing and extrusion history is given in Table 1.
