Weldbonding techniques

The parts are then placed between the electrodes of a conventional three-phase, variable pressure-type spot welder and welder together. The weld setup used to join the parts is only slightly modified from a conventional setup. After welding, the structure is placed in a low-temperature oven and cure for about an hour. Time and temperature depend on the type of adhesive and method involved.

Lockheed workers Kizer and Grosko have studied weldbonding using four different surface preparation techniques on aluminum. A technique developed for aluminum by the Northrop Grumman Corporation for the Air Force follows. It was found to be superior to the previously recommended FPL etch plus 60-min dichromate seal.
