The inadequacy of control experiments cannot be attributed to the lack of availability of electron microscopes. Yet only rarely were control experiments conducted to demonstrate that no single reactant or product gas was responsible for the observed surface modification. Furthermore, few investigations were conducted in which weight change was measured. Even more rare were investigations designed to determine the influence of variations in reaction parameters on the nature of the etching process. 

Crude experiments were performed in the laboratory with substances unlikely to show significant weight change by adsorption of water or oxygen and sufficiently volatile for loss to be recorded conveniently on an ordinary balance. Petri dishes (41 sq. cm. area) were used to contain the substances, mostly liquids and used in the pure state. Two solids were included p-dichlorobenzene and naphthalene. These were layered in coarse powder form, and the surface was sprayed with a solution of low molecular weight polyisobutene in petroleum ether until it was sticky enough to prevent blowing of the powder in the wind it was intended to use. 

One possible confound for this experiment is that liver weight changes by up to 15 % during the day as glycogen levels drop (Latour et al. 1999) and so care must be taken in longitudinal studies that animals are always imaged at the same time of day to reduce within animal variance. In addition, care must be exercised with the choice of anaesthetic as anaesthetics such as halothane are hepatotoxic and may influence the outcome of the study when there are several imaging sessions. 

Twenty different polymers have been collected from commercially available sources in sheet format of two different thicknesses. Coupon-shaped samples of 1 x 4 cm were prepared from all samples for treatment with carbon dioxide. Five samples were used in each experiment and the reported weight change data was thus an average of five values. 

Weight changes (%) were measured the same day as the treatments, decompression time of one hour was used in all experiments.
