The inadequacy of control experiments cannot be attributed to the lack of availability of electron microscopes. Yet only rarely were control experiments conducted to demonstrate that no single reactant or product gas was responsible for the observed surface modification. Furthermore, few investigations were conducted in which weight change was measured. Crude experiments were performed in the laboratory with substances unlikely to show significant weight change by adsorption of water or oxygen and sufficiently volatile for loss to be recorded conveniently on an ordinary balance. Petri dishes (41 sq. cm. area) were used to contain the substances, mostly liquids and used in the pure state. Two solids were included p-dichlorobenzene and naphthalene. One possible confound for this experiment is that liver weight changes by up to 15 % during the day as glycogen levels drop (Latour et al. 1999) and so care must be taken in longitudinal studies that animals are always imaged at the same time of day to reduce within animal variance. In addition, care must be exercised with the choice of anaesthetic as anaesthetics such as halothane are hepatotoxic and may influence the outcome of the study when there are several imaging sessions. [Pg.388]
