The features of waterproofing layers and their protective mats are presented in table 1. Test specimens were taken from these protected multi-layer waterproofing systems. Diagram 1 depicts the principle of protected multi-layer waterproofing system. 

Consider the disposable diaper. The outer, waterproof layer is composed of polyethylene. The polymeri2ation reaction that produces polyethylene is shown in Section 12.4. The diapers have elastic to prevent leaking. The elastic is made of a natural polymer, rubber. The monomer from which natural rubber is formed is 2-methyl-l,3-butadiene. The common name of this monomer is isoprene. As we will see in coming chapters, iso-prene is an important monomer in the synthesis of many natural polymers. 

Grading VI is for sand cold asphalt used for laying a waterproofing layer, and it should always be covered with a layer of hot asphalt or cold asphalt. 

Modifying the hydrophilicity of starch has been the goal of many strategies, so as to improve the resistance of starch to water. Starch has been chemically modified by reaction with caprolactone, producing a thermoplastic that needs no plasticizer (74). Coatings can also be used, as when starch films are coated with an waterproofing layer of a nitrocellulose-wax blend, as is done with cellophane. Or, starch sheeting can be laminated with a water-resistant layer of poly(e-caprolactone) by coextrusion (75). 

As alkoxysilanes have a small intermolecular force and a small surface tension, they percolate through a capillary wall and form a strong waterproof layer, and they protect the deterioration of buildings caused by water adsorption, frost damage, injury from salt, UV, etc. Therefore, they are used as waterproof agents [31,34]. 

Then, water is pumped to a pool through a special well system. The main amount of water is pumped to the pool from collector and placed before the waterproof layer. At high concentrations of mineral salts in the water, it is diluted with water, pumped from a deep well, and placed under the waterproof layer. Next, water is enriched with oxygen in a special cascade-type aerator, then filtered, and undergoes ozonation. In so doing, the resistant organic substances such as pesticides are destroyed, and the rest of pathogenic bacteria and viruses are inactivated. Then, water is softened, if necessary, and its pH should be adjusted to the desired level. 

The term sheet and membrane tend to be interchangeable. By definition, a membrane refers to the finished built-up waterproofing layer comprising one or more prefabricated sheets. As such, a sheet becomes a membrane in a single-ply application and a modified bituminous membrane may have two sheets, base and cap. 

A large proportion of extrusion coated materials are used in the paper sack industry where a waterproof layer can be provided very cheaply and in the carton for distributing milk and other liquids. The packaging of frozen foods is a large outlet for extrusion coated board. Extrusion coated... 

In situ liners have two main applications in commercial developments one as a waterproofing layer for foundations and the other as a vapor barrier.
