Water for hydration

The proper amount of water must be mixed with the dry cement product to ensure only sufficient water for hydration of the cement. Excess water above that needed for hydration will reduce the final strength of the set cement and leave voids in the cement column that are filled with unset liquid. Insufficient water for proper hydration will leave voids filled with dry unset cement, or result in a slurry too viscous to pump. [Pg.1181]

Intravenous replacement solutions are a source of electrolytes and water for hydration (Normosol M Ringer s Injection, Lactated Ringer s, Plasma-Lyte R), and used to facilitate amino acid utilization and maintain electrolyte balance (Lypholyte, Multilyte, TPN Electrolytes). Dextrose and electrolyte solutions such as Plasma-Lyte R and 5% dextrose are used as a parenteral source of electrolytes, calories, or water for hydration. Invert sugar-electrolyte solutions, such as Multiple Electrolytes and Travert 5% and 10%, contain equal parts of dextrose and fructose and are used as a source of calories and hydration. [Pg.635]

O2 consumption rate becomes smaller under 0.7 V, the O2 concentration at the reaction surface recovers, thus leading to an increase in the cell current density. The current rise time corresponds well with the characteristic time scale of gas phase transport as analyzed above. The rise in the cell current, however, experiences an overshoot because the polymer membrane still maintains a higher water content corresponding to 0.6 V. It then takes about 15 s for the membrane to adjust its water content at the steady state corresponding to 0.7 V. This numerical example clearly illustrates the profound impact of water management on transient dynamics of low humidity PEFC engines where the polymer membrane relies on reaction water for hydration or dehydration. [Pg.503]

Carbonic anhydrase is a zinc(II) metalloenzyme which catalyzes the hydration and dehydration of carbon dioxide, C02+H20 H+ + HC03. 25 As a result there has been considerable interest in the metal ion-promoted hydration of carbonyl substrates as potential model systems for the enzyme. For example, Pocker and Meany519 studied the reversible hydration of 2- and 4-pyridinecarbaldehyde by carbonic anhydrase, zinc(II), cobalt(II), H20 and OH. The catalytic efficiency of bovine carbonic anhydrase is ca. 108 times greater than that of water for hydration of both 2- and 4-pyridinecarbaldehydes. Zinc(II) and cobalt(II) are ca. 107 times more effective than water for the hydration of 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde, but are much less effective with 4-pyridinecarbaldehyde. Presumably in the case of 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde complexes of type (166) are formed in solution. Polarization of the carbonyl group by the metal ion assists nucleophilic attack by water or hydroxide ion. Further studies of this reaction have been made,520,521 but the mechanistic details of the catalysis are unclear. Metal-bound nucleophiles (M—OH or M—OH2) could, for example, be involved in the catalysis. [Pg.474]

The cement-based process consists of the mixing of the waste with cement and, possibility, other additives. The liquid waste or fluid sludge is used as the mix water for hydration of the cement. Cementation of the mixture occurs when the waste is added. First, a calcium-silicate-hydrate gel forms followed by the hardening of the material as thin, densely-packed, silicate fibrils grow and interface. Heavy metals in the waste are converted to insoluble hydroxides in the alkaline environment of the cement paste and trapped within the pores of the cement paste matrix. It is also possible that some of the metals may be physically... [Pg.218]

Sample Preparation. Films were made from the polymers that were isolated after synthesis by solvent-casting from acetone solution and drying at room temperature under slow nitrogen flow. Solvolysis of PVTFA to PVA was carried out by a 2-h immersion of the film in a 10-wt % solution of reagent grade ammonium hydroxide in methanol. The films were then immersed in water for hydration and washing. [Pg.64]

Otherwise, for a w/c ratio < 0.5 only reduced water flow is possible. Then there is enough water for hydration and also enough space for hydration products, which swell during the process so that the capillary pores may have reduced permeability. These values for mortars and concretes depend on the mixture proportions and quality of components, and also on special admixtures added to modify the fluidity of the fresh mix. [Pg.157]
