Water coagulation

Ion exchange, in contrast, creates an effluent that contains between two and five times the mass of inorganic material removed from the product water. Coagulation with aluminum or iron salts creates a sludge, which creates a disposal problem. Green pressure, especially in Switzerland and mid-west USA, which lie in the middle of large land masses, has started to force industrialists to install alternative membrane processes to avoid these discharges. [Pg.482]

AI(III) and Fe(III) salts are acids. The addition of these chemicals to water is similar to an acidimetric titration of the water. As a result, the pH of the system after the addition of these coagulants will depend upon the coagulant dosage and the alkalinity of the water or waste water. Coagulation by Fe(III) and AI(III) polymers would be expected to exhibit restabilization (overdosing) and stoichiometry, if adsorption is important. [Pg.277]

Two somces of solids are available for the production of sludge the suspended solids or tmbidity in the raw water and the solids produced from the coagulant. The suspended solids in smface raw waters can vary from 5 to 1(X)0 mg/L (Sincero, 1968). The aim of coagulation treatment is to produce a clear water. Thus, for practical purposes, suspended solids can be assumed to be all removed. If V is the cubic meters of water coagulated and sp, are the solids, the kilograms of solids produced from the suspended solids is ([ p Jn,g/1000) , where [ p J g is in mg/L. [Pg.591]

A raw water coutaiuiug 140 mg/L of dissolved solids is subjected to coagulation treatment using copperas. The alkalinity requirement is 18 mg/L as CaC03and the natural alkalinity of the raw water is 100 mg/L as CaCO. Calculate the cubic meters of water coagulated, if the optimum dose of the coagulant is 50 mg/L. [Pg.601]

A raw water containing 140 mg/L of dissolved solids is subjected to a coagulation treatment using Fe2(S04)3. The current acidity and pH are, respectively, 30 mg/L as CaCOs and 5.9. The amount of pure lime used per cubic meter of water coagulated is 0.016865135 kg. Calculate the value of the pH that the coagulation was adjusted to. [Pg.602]

The characterization of properties of inorganic colloids is not very complicated, nevertheless, presentation of more details about turbid particles is not common [l, 26 ]. However, Alaerts and Van Haute [26 ]draw attention to the fact that an important controUing parameter in turbid water coagulation is the origin and characteristics of particles. [Pg.299]

Within the two broad classes, proteins are subdivided on the basis of physical properties, especially solubility for example, albumins (soluble in water, coagulated by heat), globulins (insoluble in water, soluble in dilute salt solutions), etc. [Pg.1150]

Hear now this secret keep the body in our mercurial water, till it ascends with the white soul, and the earthy part descends to the bottom, which is called the residing earth. Then you shall see the water coagulate itself with the body, and be assured the art is true because the body coagulates the moisture into dryness, like as the rennet of a lamb or calf turns milk into cheese. In the same manner the spirit penetrates the body, and is perfectly comixed with it in its smallest atoms, and the body draws to itself his moisture, to wit, its white soul, like as the loadstone draws iron, because of the nearness and likeness of its nature and then one contains the other. And this is... [Pg.18]

Spirit-Body is mixed with the Soul and the Spirit and raised seven times into the Air, through which the Spirit-Body is truly exalted and is impregnated with the heavenly influences until the materia sublimates itself totally clearly, like a star. This is the true exaltation of our Stone, our in the Air born-child, which as soon as it returns again into its seed containing water, coagulates with the Soul and the Spirit into a red-gold sap which is our Elixir. [Pg.67]

Boiling water coagulates aynaptase, and destroys its power as a ferment. [Pg.215]

Protein coagulation has also been reported occurring in microorganisms at alcohol concentrations of 60-70%. In the absence of water, proteins are not denaturated as readily as when water is present. This is likely why absolute ethanol is less bactericidal than are mixtures of alcohol and water. Coagulation of cellular proteins leads to loss of cellular functions. [Pg.124]

Let us consider the change of the initial drop spectrum, which is described by distribution (21.3), under the influence of mass exchange (evaporation of methanol or water), coagulations, breakup, and deposition of drops on the pipe wall. As was mentioned earlier, it is not feasible to take into account the flux of drops detached from the wall, because of the absence of reliable data. [Pg.682]

Kim et al. discussed surface structure and the phase separation mechaiusm of polysulfone membranes by AFM [43]. A membrane formed by immersion in a pure water coagulation bath showed a nodular structure with a nodule size of about 25 nm, which was believed to be the result of spinodal decomposition. A membrane formed by immersion in a coagulation bath mixture (water/NMP 20/80 by weight) had the porous structure with a mean radius of 146 nm, which was the result of nucleation and growth of the polymer-poor phase. [Pg.89]
