The furnace has an adjustable rotation rate of 0.5-10 rpm. The kiln is heated externally. The sealing of rotary kilns is a difficult task, especially for a pyrolyzer. The internal pressure of the kiln is higher than atmospheric pressure. A special friction-type seal is required for a pyrolyzer operating at high temperature. Solid waste with different shapes, sizes, and heating values can be fed into rotary kilns in batches or continuously. [Pg.712]

The Natural Reactor. Some two biUion years ago, uranium had a much higher (ca 3%) fraction of U than that of modem times (0.7%). There is a difference in half-hves of the two principal uranium isotopes, U having a half-life of 7.08 x 10 yr and U 4.43 x 10 yr. A natural reactor existed, long before the dinosaurs were extinct and before humans appeared on the earth, in the African state of Gabon, near Oklo. Conditions were favorable for a neutron chain reaction involving only uranium and water. Evidence that this process continued intermittently over thousands of years is provided by concentration measurements of fission products and plutonium isotopes. Usehil information about retention or migration of radioactive wastes can be gleaned from studies of this natural reactor and its products (12). [Pg.222]

Distillation. Distillation separates volatile components from a waste stream by taking advantage of differences in vapor pressures or boiling points among volatile fractions and water. There are two general types of distillation, batch or differential distillation and continuous fractional or multistage distillation (see also Distillation). [Pg.161]

Comparisons are available on the relative performance and costs for dewatering municipal sludges (2). The relative performance of different filters and conditioners on waste sludges is shown in Table 3. The same sludge was treated on two belt-filter presses, two different centrifuges, and rotary vacuum filter (75). In another study, a variable chamber filter press, fixed-volume filter press, continuous belt-filter press, and rotary vacuum filter were compared for performance, capacity, and capital and operating costs (69). [Pg.23]

Continuous clarifiers generally are employed with dilute suspensions, principally industrial process streams and domestic municipal wastes, and their primary purpose is to produce a relatively clear overflow. They are basically identical to thickeners in design and layout except that they employ a mechanism of hghter construction and a drive head with a lower torque capability. These differences are permitted in clarification applications because the thickened pulp produced is smaller in volume and appreciably lower in suspended solids concentration, owing in part to the large percentage of relatively fine (smaller than 10 Im) solids. The installed cost of a clarifier, therefore, is approximately 5 to 10 percent less than that of a thickener of equal tank size, as given in Fig. 18-94. [Pg.1683]

In conclusion, the technology of total liquefaction of apple allows to work with a continuous process with less labour and faster than with a classical one, to get a high and constant yield during the whole processing season at a very high level (93- 95%), to get a pulp with a low content of solids (about 20% in volume) which can be centrifuged instead of pressed (lower investment in equipment), to decrease the quantity of waste pomace, to decrease the production costs. Liquefaction technology allows to process different fruits with the same process, at last to liquefy fruits for which no equipment had been developed to extract the juice or for which the use of pectinases did not allow to get juice such as tropical fruits. [Pg.458]

The high amounts in which these substances are consumed and produced have conferred illicit drugs and their human metabolites a pseudo-persistent character in the environment. Like over-the-counter and prescribed pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs are metabolized after consumption and different proportions of the parent compound and metabolic by-products are excreted via urine or feces and flushed into the sewage system toward wastewater treatment facilities, if existing. However, these substances are poorly or incompletely removed by conventional waste-water treatment processes [2, 3]. As a consequence, illicit drugs and metabolites are continuously introduced via wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents into the aquatic media. In fact, this constitutes the main route of entry of this type of compounds into the environment as direct disposal is unlikely. [Pg.190]

Renal replacement therapy (RRT), such as hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, maintains fluid and electrolyte balance while removing waste products. See Table 75-4 for indications for RRT in ARF. Intermittent and continuous options have different advantages (and disadvantages) but, after correcting for severity of illness, have similar outcomes. Consequently, hybrid approaches (e.g., sustained low-efficiency dialysis and extended daily dialysis) are being developed to provide the advantages of both. [Pg.867]
