Vapour pressure investigations of the systems here under discussion have frequently been carried out (cf. Olah, 1963). However, many of these studies are concerned with the question of the composition of the complexes formed in binary or ternary systems (Van Dyke, 1950 Brown and Pearsall, 1952 Brown and Brady, 1949, 1952 Brown and Wallace, 1953a, b Lieser and Pfluger, 1960a, b). To answer this question, the vapour pressm-e diagrams were recorded as a function of the composition of the binary or ternary system. The direct evaluation of the Henry s law constant, however, also permits the basicity of the unsaturated hydrocarbons to be determined. 

In 1958, as I remember it, Fred Basolo and I, Arthur Adamson and Henry Taube, and H. R. Hunt came out with this mechanism basically, stressing slightly different features. Then Dr. Tobe joined the bandwagon with this mechanism in 1959, and the term solvent assisted dissociation was coined by Wallace and his group in Canada in 1961. That is the story as I see it at the present time... 

Henry A. Wallace developed commercial hybrid seed com (Crabb, 1947), and in 1928 he and Lester Pfister made hybrid pollination completely workable commercially. Eventually, hybrids accounted for nearly all com production in the United States.

In the spring and summer of 1945, with the bomb almost ready to wreak its fearsome destruction, Franck held Compton to his promise. He had breakfast with Secretary of Commerce (later Vice President) Henry A. Wallace in Washington. And together with several other scientists from the atom bomb project, Franck authored a report that urged the government not to use its new weapon. That document, called the Franck Report, became the manifesto of a new movement.

Policy was the President s prerogative. As soon as Bush exposed it to view Roosevelt seized it Bush took that decision to be the most important outcome of the meeting and put it emphatically first in his memorandum to Conant Roosevelt wanted policy consideration restricted to a small group (it came to be called the Top Policy Group). He named its members Vice President Wallace, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall, Bush and Conant Every man owed his authority to the President Roosevelt had instinctively reserved nuclear weapons policy to himself. 

Without waiting for Compton s committee to finish its work, Bush went to see the President. On October 9 Bush met with Roosevelt and Vice President Henry A. Wallace (briefed on uranium research in July). Bush summarized the British findings, discussed cost and duration of a bomb project, and emphasized the uncertainty of the situation. He also received the President s permission to explore construction needs with the Army. Roosevelt instructed him to move as quickly as possible but not to go beyond research and development. Bush, then, was to find out if a bomb could be built and at what cost but not to proceed to the production...
