Walker intramuscular carcinosarcoma

Crotepoxide, for example, was isolated from fruits of Croton macrostachys and has been shown to have significant tumor-inhibitory activity for Lewis lung carcinoma in mice (LL) and Walker intramuscular carcinosarcoma in rats (WM). 

Within the last 10 years a great number of plants have been screened for antitumour active alkaloids. The two major groups involved in this search were the National Cancer Institute and a group of chemists and biologists at Eli Lilly and Co. Crude extracts and crystalline alkaloids were screened in vitro (cell cultures) and in vivo against sarcoma 180, Walker 256 intramuscular carcinosarcoma, Eagle s K.B. strain of human carcinoma of the nasopharynx, Lewis lung carcinoma, etc. The tests, which were reproducible, were made under standard conditions set up by the C.C.N.S.C. (Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Centre). 

Extracts of Jatropha gossypiifolia L. and related species have been used for many years in Costa Rica to treat cancerous growths. An alcoholic extract of the roots of Jatropha gossypiifolia (supplied by J. A. Saenz Renauld of the University of Costa Rica) was found by CCNSC to show inhibitory activity against four standard animal tumor systems (sarcoma 180, Lewis lung carcinoma, and lymphocytic leukemia P-388 in the mouse, and the Walker 256 intramuscular carcinosarcoma in the rat) and in vitro...
