W-Cymene

The product is analyzed by vapor phase chromatography using a 6-ft., f-in. O.D. copper tube, packed with 5% Bentone-34 (Wilkins Instrument Co.) and 0.5% XF-1150 (General Electric Silicone Products) on Diatoport-S (80-100 mesh) (F and M Co.) flow rate of helium 60 ml./min., oven temperature 85°. This column separates m-cymene (retention time 12 minutes) from />-cymene (retention time 10 minutes) but does not resolve the ortho isomer. The purity of the distilled w-cymene is above 98%. 

The method of preparation in this procedure is adapted from that of McCauley and Lien by which they obtained w-cymene in unstated yields.6 The procedure has been altered to operate at —78° rather than —20°. 

Cymex [Cymene extraction] One of the Sorbex processes, for extracting p-cymenc or /w-cymene from cymene isomers. By 1990, one plant had been licensed. 

Other Synthetic Fluids. Other synthetic fluids are used as heat-transfer fluids although most of them are not sold specifically for this purpose. Fluids that sometimes are used include diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butyl carbitol, w -cymene, several silanes, several silicone fluids, some silicate fluids, other polyalkylene glycols, other oiganic ethers, and other molten salts. Fluidized solids also are used as heat-transfer media.

Bisquaternary, as well as monoquaternary compounds and various amino derivatives, react with tetraphenylborate and similar compounds to form stable ion-pair complexes. TPSB was found to be very suitable as an ion-pairing agent for bisquaternary drugs with which it forms very insoluble compounds. The TPSB complexes were prepared in situ, by soaking the TPSB (potassium salt)/PVC membranes in the appropriate bisquaternary solution. Of the plasticizers tested, 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE), dioctylphthalate, di-iso-butylphthalate, nitrobenzene, 2-nitro- -cymene, NPOE showed the best behavior in terms of response time and reproducibility. The membrane compositions were 3.2% (w/w) TPSB, 64.5% (w/w) NPOE and 32.3% (w/w) PVC.

A large number of other compounds have now been studied including 1-butenebenzyl bromide and allyl bromide substituted benzyl bromides 02 w-propyl benzene 9 6 w-butyl benzene 297 cumene, -butyl benzene and / -cymene and bromobenzene. The work is continuing.
