An alternative approach to the correlation of catalyst deactivation kinetics has been widely employed for coking mechanisms. Here the precise reactions that cause deactivation may be more complex or difficult to identify than in chemical poisoning, and one may not write such precise expressions as equation (3-94) for (—r ). The practice generally has been to relate activity to the time of utilization or time-on-stream , and a number of mathematical forms have been employed. The best known is the Voorhies correlation [A. Instead, they proposed a time on stream theory to model the catalyst deactivation. However, in an earlier work by Voorhies (2), a linear correlation between conversion and coke on catalyst for fixed-bed catalytic cracking was derived. Rudershausen and Watson (3) also observed the similar behavior. Coke on catalyst can reduce the activity by covering the active sites and blocking the pores. The effects of pore size on catalyst performance during hydrotreating coal oils in trickle-bed reactors have been studied experimentally by Ahmed and Crynes (4) and by Sooter (5). Figure 1 illustrates the extent of n-heptane conversion over those catalysts as a function of time-on-stream, working under deactivation conditions. The catalyst deactivation was modeled by the well-known Voorhies equation C= Af [6], where C denotes percentage conversion, t denotes time-on-stream (min), and A and B are empirical parameters. Even though the Voorhies equation was originally used to correlate the coke content with time, the use of the equation for correlating activity and time was also confirmed by Magnoux et. al.
