Volunteers Appendix

The CWS spent several years doing animal studies to establish the safely of proceeding with such tests in volunteers. Rules governing the use of humans in medical experiments originated during the Nuremberg Military Tribunals. (These principles, in their unabridged form, are in the appendix.) The main points were as follows ... 

Spectrometer can measure the amount of glycogen from the content of C-labelled glucose in glycogen in Uver or muscle of a volunteer (for description of isotopes, see Appendix 2.2). This is a non-invasive technique, but it gives similar results to the biopsy method (Chapter 16) (Appendix 2.3). 

APPENDIX A. HISTORY OF THE EDGEWOOD TESTING PROGRAM VOLUNTEER... 

A fairly extensive discussion of the procedures used is provided in the Inspector General s report, Use of Volunteers In Chemical Agent Research, prepared by Colonel James R. Taylor and Major William H. Johnson and dated March 1976 (listed In Appendixes C,D). 

If you have not already done so, before reading this section, turn to Appendix A and complete the Inventory of Retirement Activities (IRA). When this has been accomplished and you have read the chapters in this section, you ll be able to compare your high, average, and low retirement interest activities decide if Plan A (leisure), Plan B (leisure plus part-time work), Plan C (leisure plus a volunteer activity) or Plan D (full-time work) is best for you. 

You need to know yourself well to determine if volunteerism is right for you. If you rated yourself high in volunteer work (category 16 in the IRA exercise in Appendix A, Inventory of Retirement Activities ), Plan C is a possibility for you. Know your personal values well if you seriously consider this choice. The following Volunteer-Leisure Preference Scale may help you in this respect. 

Ketchum (228) summarized the experiments with 3-qulnuclldlnyl benzllate performed between August 1960 and July 1963 with human volunteers. The report Included an appendix, prepared by Claude McClure, Jr., on the chemistry and biochemistry of 3-qulnuclldlnyl benzllate. The outstanding Information derived from this appendix Is that the brain was the only organ of mice found to contain 3h 48 h after Intraperltoneal Injection of [3H]3-qulnucIidlnyl benzllate. Perfusion of this benzllate through the livers of rats had Indicated that the liver destroyed the compound quickly, 90Z of the compound having disappeared from the perfusate within 30 min and less than 0.22 of the compound being found unaltered In the bile. The products were not known. Several hypotheses of biochemical mechanisms of action of 3-qulnuclldlnyl benzllate were presented, but no firm support for any of them was available. 

The MRL was calculated from a minimal LOAEL of 0.4 ppm for symptoms of increased itching, sneezing, mucosal congestion, and transient burning sensation of the eyes and of the nasal passages, and elevated eosinophil counts and a transient increase in albumin content of nasal lavage fluid in volunteers exposed to formaldehyde for 2 hours (Pazdrak et al. 1993). Tlie LOAEL was divided by an uncertainty factor of nine (three for the use of a minimal LOAEL and three for human variability) as described in Appendix A.
