Because Nafion film can preconcentrate organic cations at a substrate electrode surface, Nafion-coated electrodes can be used as sensitive and selective sensors for electroactive organic cations. The film-entrapped ion is then either oxidized or reduced and the resulting current is recorded and related to the concentration of ions in the aqueous solution (qualitatively similar to anodic stripping voltammetry). It was shown that ion-exchange voltammetric determination of the dication methyl viologen at a Nafion-film-coated electrode results in an improvement of three orders of magnitude in detection limit relative to an uncoated electrode.46... [Pg.100]

Although separate determination of the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of electron transfer to transient radicals is certainly important from a fundamental point of view, the cyclic voltammetric determination of the reduction potentials and dimerization parameters may be useful to devise preparative-scale strategies. The voltammetric determination of nitrate following a preconcentration step using Permion 1025 was developed by Cox, Lundquist and Washinger (33). Nitrate is exchanged from the sample solution through the membrane into a small volume cell contain ing 0.1 M potassium chloride and 0.01 M lanthanum chloride. Another example involves the cyclic voltammetric determination of salbutamol using a VACNT electrode proposed by Karuwan et al7 The VACNT electrodes were prepared on a gold-coated silicon substrate by CVD using acetylene and argon gases at 700 °C.
