The surfaces consisted of a random mixture of Pt and Ru sites in a square lattice, at different mixing ratios. Our initial simulations were designed to mimic as closely as possible the experiments carried out by Gasteiger et al. [38]. The most common species determined by cathodic stripping voltammetry are anions such as halides or sulphide, at a mercury electrode. This involves formation of a film of mercury(I) salts on the electrode in the deposition step. The anodic oxidation process involved in the deposition step is in fact the oxidation of mercury metal to mercury(I) ions. These immediately precipitate insoluble mercury(I) salts with the halide ion etc, on to the surface of the electrode. The anodic deposition potential required depends on the anion concerned. The subsequent cathodic stripping peak for the mercury(I) salt of each anion has at its own individual potential. [Pg.195]

For example, zinc sulfide, copper sulfide, cadmium sulfide, and lead sulfide Qdots were attached to four different secondary antibodies to detect four different proteins [56]. The four different Qdots were dissolved to yield four different metal ions, each associated with a different protein. These were measured by stripping voltammetry after dissolution of the particles following the binding steps. Multiple metal striped rods, spheres or alloy rods were also used for multiplexing. The rods were capped with a gold end for attachment to Ab2. Upon dissolution, these materials give a series of metal stripping peaks whose peak potentials and relative intensities are associated with individual analyte proteins [38]. The voltammetry in Figure 17.10 shows the characteristic features expected for electrodeposition with a mass transport-limited reduction of Cu(I) to Cu(0) at negative potentials, accompanied by a stripping peak for Cu on the return scan.
