Voltage monitoring

To adapt a personal mobility scooter to fuel cell-powered operation, it was first necessary to determine peak and average power requirements of a standard battery-equipped scooter. A battery-powered scooter was equipped with current and voltage monitoring circuitry and was driven under common operating conditions. A Rheovibron interface, on command from the calculator, uses a signal from either the load or displacement transducer to the lock-in amplifier where it is measured. The measured result is passed through the Amp, Phase, Temp, and Relay cards to the Voltage Monitor where it is digitized and stored in the calculator memory. 

Motor Power Supply and Amplifier, and Voltage Monitor are all contained in the Multiprogrammer. 

A more sophisticated approach is the application of a current signal to the MUT and to monitor the voltage developed across it. Moreover, the use of a second pair of electrodes for voltage monitoring reduces greatly the electrode polarization (Figures 8.33 and 8.34).

The control philosophy should include acid flow measurement with alanns. The pH meter, in addition to high and low alanns, should have a low-pH interlock that stops the addition of acid. Some voltage monitoring systems also respond to sudden changes in cell voltages by stopping the acid flow. Finally, acid flow also should be stopped early in the cell shutdown process (Section 13.8.3.1) and whenever the rectifiers trip. 

There have been a number of systems developed to detect current distribution problems and a few have been applied across electrowinning and electrorefming operations for a variety of metals. The most eommon methods include infra-red imaging, cell voltage monitoring, and hand held gauss and individual cathode current measurement devices. 

Commercial batteries that require multiple cells coruiected both in series and in parallel are commonly configured by coruiecting cells in parallel (banks) before the banks are connected in series. This helps to reduce the complexity of current and voltage monitoring [1-3]. However, this method of assembling banks before connecting the banks in series has its limitations, which are addressed in Section 3 and proper design controls need to be incorporated.

In the current follower mode (Figure 2-30), the current flows around the op amp through a resistance. The voltage monitored at the output is then, with respect to ground, I , = iR.

Neither this nor the sensitivity of the melting-alloy type to phase loss should be seen as true single-phasing protection. If single-phasing protection is a concern, complete protection may be provided by an electronic voltage monitor or solid-state overload relay.
