Vitamin Megadosing the Real Truth

Vitamins are materials that are needed for the proper functions of human (or animal) life, but the body cannot synthesize them in isolation they have to be consmned with the diet. Today, it is well known that both insufficiently low and uimecessarily high amounts of vitamin intake may result in health problems. There are widely accepted recommendations for the daily intakes of all vitamins, but a sizable group of people do not seem to trast this expert advice. Believers in consuming megadoses of vitamins basically say more is better , and even the term alternative vitamin therapy has been coined. Are there any scientific facts to support this view Could too much of a good thing be bad in this case  [Pg.160]

The beginning of the twentieth century saw major discoveries about the roles of vitamins it was recognized that consuming food with sufficiently high caloric value was not enough to maintain a healthy diet. Some substances, later called vitamins, were found to be indispensable in small amounts. Their deficiency was assumed to cause long known diseases such as scurvy (defective coimective tissues, bleeding) [Pg.160]

there are no doubts about the necessity of vitamin consumption. However, a debate is still in progress about the amount necessary and the form of intake. A healthy diet does provide sufficient quantities of all necessary vitamins, so some experts do not recommend taking vitamins as a supplement to a normal diet. A few diseases (mostly gastrointestinal) and even pregnancy may necessitate the intake of certain vitamins in concentrated forms as capsules. Some claim that a modem diet is an unhealthy one, so taking extra vitamins is the only way to ensure a healthy life. More extreme opinions even posit that the nutritional experts usually recommend amounts that are way too low, and much more is in fact necessary. [Pg.161]
