Vitamin deprivation symptom

Eijkman s syndrome, a complex of nervous symptoms in animals deprived of vitamin Bl, is named for him. [Pg.88]

In healthy subjects, sufficient amounts of vitamin Bjj are available in the liver to protect against deficiency even during long periods of dietary vitamin Bjj deprivation. In subjects whose vitamin B12 absorption is completely impaired, the first symptoms of... [Pg.832]

Human newborns from developed and developing countries frequently contain liver reserves of vitamin A between 20 and 30 xg/g or lower (Table VII). These reserves accumulate with age when the dietary intake of the vitamin is adequate (Underwood et al., 1970 Hoppner et al., 1969 Olson et ai, 1979) but less so where dietary sources are limited. In Northeast Brazil, Olson (1979) reported the lowest values for infants 6-12 months of age. The protection period for an adult with liver stores of 20 xg/g would be expected to be considerably longer than 100 days because of lower requirements and larger total liver and body stores. This expectation is consistent with the lengthy periods before the appearance of symptoms reported for intentionally vitamin A-deprived normal adults (Hume and Krebs, 1949 Sauberlich et al., 1974). [Pg.330]

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS. The numerous symptoms of thiamin deficienq vary with the severity and duration of the deprivation of the vitamin. [Pg.1018]

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS. When deprived of a dietary source of vitamin C for a sufficient length of time, man, along with other primates and several other species, develops scurvy, a potentially fatal disease. [Pg.1095]

Since vitamin Bj2 is found only in animal food, pure vegetarians risk its deficiency over the course of several years. The requirement of vitamin B12 is (with vitamin D) the smallest of all vitamins - only two micrograms per day, with liver stores usually enough to last for five years of deprivation. Vitamin Bj2 participates in DNA synthesis with folic acid. Humans are unable to synthesize folic acid and therefore it is considered a vitamin that must be supplied in the diet. Deficiency of vitamin B 2 or folic acid leads to similar anemia symptoms. There is a separate effect of vitamin Bj2 deficiency on the nervous system. ... [Pg.215]
