Viscous adhesion

The adhesive was developed for application to seal food containers with alumina foils and to seal glass plates. In this case, the vinyl polymerization step can be carried out by UV light radiation through the already mounted glass plates with a photoactive radical initiator to cure the viscous adhesive material. Another application of this material is the development of diffusion barrier containing protective coatings on medieval stained glasses (31). [Pg.339]

In certain cases it is necessary for the adhesive formulator to reduce the viscosity of the adhesive system to achieve better application and wetting characteristics. Solubility soluble 1 in 20 of glycerin, 1 in 20 of propylene glycol, 1 in 2.7 of water practically insoluble in ethanol (95%). In water, acacia dissolves very slowly, although almost completely after two hours, in twice the mass of water leaving only a very small residue of powder. Cyanoacrylates bond well to wood despite the porous and acidic nature of the material. A viscous adhesive cured with a surface activator will prevent the adhesive from wicking away from the bondline and overcome the natural acidity of the wood. The nature of the initiator influences the durability of the cured bond. Strongly alkaline initiators promote hydrolysis of the adhesive, thus shortening the useful lifetime of the bonded joint. Another unusual type wall covering material is the plastic laminates found on countertops. These are quite commonly installed on wall surfaces for backsplashes. This requires a more viscous adhesive than the contact cements that are normally used on countertop work, because of uneven wall surfaces. [Pg.690]

These pumps are often used for processing highly viscous adhesives. The design of a twin piston pump is schematically shown in Fig. 38.4. The special feature of a twin piston pump is that it transports materials in both movement directions. This is achieved due to the fact that the two chambers, which are separated by the piston, are kept in phase with each other by a nonreturn valve, and the cross section of the lower chamber is twice as large as the cross section of the upper chamber. Simultaneously, the adhesive in the upper chamber is transported via the outlet into the connected pipe system.
