Vida lectins

Vida graminea lectin Vida graminea Oligosaccharide... [Pg.501]

Favin, the lectin present in the fava bean Vida faba), is a tetrameric glycoprotein composed of two a-chains (Mr = 5571 Da) and two 3-chains (Mr = 20 700 Da) united by non-covalent forces [96,97]. Amino acid analyses reveal high proportions of acidic and hydroxylic amino acids, substantial amounts of hydrophobic amino acids, and the absence of cysteine and methionine [96,97]. Both the a- and 3-chains have been... [Pg.414]

These proteins occur in the seeds of many plants but are especially common in the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) (more than 600 species) and the Euphorbiaceae (lectins also occur in other organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and animals). In legumes, lectins are usually found in the cotyledons (Liener, 1991). Well-known plant lectins are concanavalin A, from jack beans Canavalia ensiformis), favin, from the broad bean (Vida faba), and phasin, from the kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) (Ramshaw, 1982), The toxicity of lectins differs considerably (Liener, 1991 Liener et al, 1986). Data for lectins are given in Liener et al. (1986) and Lis and Sharon (1981). [Pg.244]

A new, non-specific phytohaemagglutinin from lentil (Lens esculentid) seeds has been shown to be a glycoprotein of molecular weight 5.3 x 10. A lectin found in the seeds of Vida ervilla has a molecular weight of 6 x 10, and consists of four subunits composed of two types of peptide chain. It has a similar specificity to that of concanavalin A, and also contains no carbohydrate. A lectin from K/c/Vz has been described. A lectin from Vistaria floribunda,... [Pg.280]
