Vertical discretization

Radiation heat transfer is assumed to be significant between each portion of the cells and those portions of other cells that are in the same plane, in the upper plane and in the lower plane. The error associated with this assumption increases when small vertical portions are considered. Figure 7.26 shows the view factors, for a cavity constituted of four cells, as the function of the length of the cell slice (vertical discretization). The four view factors have the following meaning (1) Fap - view factor between a cell and the two adjacent cells in the same horizontal plane (2) Fop - view factor between opposite cells in the same horizontal plane (3) Fad - view factor between a cell and the two adjacent cells in the upper and lower plane (4) Fod -view factor between opposite cells in the same horizontal plane. When the element length is larger than 0.04 m, the summation of these coefficients is about 0.97, which means that the error is less than 3%. The calculation of these coefficients is shown in Section 7.4.2.2. [Pg.231]

Miscellaneous Kilns. A U.S. kiln, the Fluo-Sohds, appears to be another vertical kiln type, but this is its only similarity. It operates on a different principle. It utilizes as kiln feed only a discrete granulation of 0.225—2.4 mm (65—8 mesh) sizes. DeHcately controlled by air and exhaust gas pressure, the kiln feed of granules is fluidized as a dense suspension. Because it is instmmented, this kiln can produce a very reactive lime at better than average thermal efficiency. The kiln, however, has limited utifity because the cost of obtaining the kiln feed with many hard, compact limestones is prohibitive. [Pg.173]

This usually lies between 0.25 and 6. The greater the value of recirculation ratio, the less fouling there is in the reboiler. Lower values tend to be used in horizontal thermosyphons and higher values (greater than 4) used in vertical thermosyphons. The recirculation ratio is a degree of freedom at the discretion of the designer. This should be fixed later when the detailed design is carried out. [Pg.342]

Mispositioned slits result in discrete slit scattering. Slit scattering is recognized by thin and intense streaks in horizontal and/or vertical direction that extend outward from the beam stop. Take out the sample or rotate it in order to make sure that the streaks are not resulting from an interaction of the beam with the sample.
