Electronic marketplace/E-commerce In addition to the many databases available and person-to-person contacts, E-commerce in plastics has been conducted through suppliers web sites or the dot-commerce independent web sites that link material buyers with sellers in transactions or auction formats. During the year 2000 five plastic producers/suppliers and various elastomer producers/suppliers created a new and important business model of a joint-venture web site. It provides multiple companies to join forces to do business. This is a strategy some observers call competition and others regard as just another form of selling in. an electronic format. Regardless of how it is perceived, the model will help propel e-commerce into the mainstream of processor procurement due to the size and wealth of the companies involved. The plastic model example is the largest online business-to-business site todate. [Pg.415]

While it is not a perfect indicator, it sometimes helps to keep track of how often VCs refer to their portfolio companies as "deals." If they never describe their investments in scientific or human terms, they are pure money managers with no personal commitment to the success or failure of the ventures. [Pg.593]

The third investment. Scalable Systems (http //www.scalablesys. com/), came to Incubators Work via the incubator s internal business plan competition, which was started in 2000. The competition was open to any venture that had at least one person presently on the staff of an ST company, and the prize for the winner was guaranteed seed funding of S 500,000 from Incubators Work if the business was launched. The competition regularly attracted 15-20 entries per year, but Scalable Systems was the first entrant that ended up in the Incubators Work portfolio. Thia comments ... [Pg.188]

I am not going out on a bandwagon to recmit more African Americans to chemistry. It is hard to get funding these days. It is hard to attract students. Although I believe that there is a need for more African Americans in chemistry, I am not certain that a person should go into a high risk venture like chemistry. [Pg.117]

The term person means any natural person, corporate entity, partnership, association, joint venture, or trust which is engaged in research and development, planning and design, production and manufacturing, distribution, or sales and marketing of any Drug Product. [Pg.104]

Take responsibility for successful achievement of the purpose. You really need to make it your own personal venture, thus committing yourself to seeing it through to a conclusion. To this end, you will need a personal sense of purpose, mission even - a view of how you want to shape your bit of the world and leave it different to how you found it. [Pg.32]

Provided that the project reflects a personal venture for you, this is not an unsatisfactory way of proceeding. In these circumstances you will be looking to make best use of the opportunities afforded by the project. The art is in recognizing the learning and development opportunities and knowing how to make use of them. [Pg.119]

One critical starting condition for a development project is that you treat it as a personal venture. The task or project should be something that you want to do, that you believe is worthwhile and which achieves some outcome that you care about. [Pg.119]

If you are the only person who cares about whether or not an outcome is achieved, and the nature of that outcome, there is a risk that your personal venture will not be meeting any recognized corporate goal. You should therefore consider having a client for your project. This could be your boss, or another senior manager. Or it could be the people who report to you. [Pg.121]

Having a client can certainly introduce an element of accountability into what you do. It puts you on the line to deliver a result. It can also help to ensure that the project has corporate value. On the other heind, your own commitment to a personal venture that brings about a corporate benefit should also ensure that. An indirect way of creating a sense of accountability is to make your project public , for example by publishing your project plan with a clear explanation of what you are trjdng to achieve, and perhaps also committing yourself to meike a presentation or circulate a report about the outcome. [Pg.121]

This condensation step should be taken a step further in the preparation of an elevator pitch. Imagine you are riding in an elevator with a famous venture capitalist (VC). You have one minute to interest this person in your idea before the elevator door opens. What would you say Probably you need to tell the VC the following ... [Pg.185]

There you have the essence—in a few words—of a sound approach to market development. But it lacks one essential characteristic. Let s call that motivation. Motivation comes only from a complete understanding of the product, its value to the customer, and a personal commitment to the entire project. This is known as justification and summarizes the reasons for undertaking the market development project in the first place. It is the keystone that holds the arch in place and provides the basis for commitment to a successful venture. [Pg.88]

EXTENSIONS AND COMMENTARY This entire venture into the study of TOMSO was an outgrowth of the extraordinary response that had been shown by one person to 5-TOM. There were two obvious approaches that might throw some light on the reason for this dramatic sensitivity. One would be to see if he was unusually capable of metabolizing sulfur-containing molecules, and the second would be to assume he was, and to try to guess just what product he had manufactured with his liver. [Pg.228]

Recently, the issue of whether or not Polo actually made the journey to China has come under question (Wood, 1996). Be that as it may, it is interesting that Polo could have heard about the Baku petroleum operations from his faraway Venice. Or perhaps he heard the story from his father and uncle who, in turn, had heard it during a business venture to the port of Sudak (Solaia) that lay just east of Sevastopol on the northern peninsula of the Black sea. Or Polo may have heard the story personally since it is believed that he accompanied his father and uncle on at least one of their Crimean ventures. In either case, the petroleum industry in Baku seems to have been sufficiently known by merchants in the Crimea or the products of the industry were shipped to Constantinople for sale. [Pg.24]
