Once a system is installed, no specific regular testing of day-to-day ventilation systems is required unless they are installed to comply with COSHH Regulations. This testing would normally be carried out in conjunction with annual maintenance. 

Other Recirculation or exhaust air from chemical areas is prohibited. No connection between chemical areas and other areas through ventilation system is permitted. Emergency backup power is necessary. Hoods should be tested at least semiannually or after modification or maintenance operations. Operations should be performed 20 centimeters inside hood face. 

Provision of adequate ventilation is one of the keys to development and maintenance of a contaminant-free workplace. Design of a proper ventilation system is normally a task undertaken by a professional engineer or a qualified industrial hygienist. All that will be attempted here is to present the principles so that the topic can be considered with some meaningful background. 

Recommendation 2-4. The Army should conduct a detailed analysis of the cascade ventilation system and its performance at both the Aberdeen and Newport facilities to determine the potential for agent migration during normal operations, maintenance, and upset conditions. A formal, structured evaluation should be performed that includes (1) the use of a dynamic model of the ventilation system to determine the migration of both lethal and sublethal agent concentrations and (2) reported instances of agent migration at the Tooele and Johnston Atoll baseline incineration facilities. 

An adequate maintenance program should also include a consideration of the auxiliary and safety equipment. Periodic inspections should be made of release diaphragms, safety equipment (fire-fighting equipment, gas detectors, alarm systems, flame detectors, respirators, etc.), ventilation systems, compressors, electrical equipment, etc. Detailed records should be kept of all inspections. These should show the condition of equipment, any malfunctions noted, and repairs made. All repairs should be inspected and approved by authorized personnel... 

In the MER, a separate fan exhausts 400 cfm from the Zone 1 Filter Room and discharges it into the ventilation exhaust. The purpose of this system is to exhaust any airborne contamination that could result from Zone 1 ventilation system filter replacements or fan maintenance to the HCF stack. 

Job responsibilities of this technician include the maintenance of ventilation system components, remote manipulators and other electromechanical systems, pressure/vacuum systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems. 

The Facility Engineering Support function is responsible for evaluating design, maintenance, and reliability problems at the HCF involving the ventilation system, manipulators, shield windows, remotely operated jigs and fixtures, and information display consoles. In the longer term, these responsibilities may also include facility structural modiflcations and robotically controlled chemical process routines for isotope processing.

Even the best-engineered and most carefully installed ventilation system requires routine maintenance. Blocked or plugged air intakes and exhausts, as well as control system calibration and operation, can alter the performance of the total ventilation system. Filters become loaded, belts loosen, bearings require lubrication, motors need attention, ducts corrode, and minor components fail. These malfunctions, individually or collectively, can affect overall ventilation performance.
