Vegetative leaves

The gibberellins also have been tested on a wide range of vegetable crops, with results to date that are spectacular but often not beneficial. For example, in many species, such treatment can induce premature flowering, which is undesirable in crops such as cabbage, since it is the vegetative leaves that are commercially valuable. 

Verj low incidences of hypertension have been found in "primitive" societies, where the Na intake is very low (10-60 mmol/day). For example, certain groups in Papua New Guinea, do not add salt to their diet. The diet, which may consist of sweet potatoes, plantains, vegetable leaves, and com, supplies 20 to 40 mmol of Na per day. Eskimos also consume a low-Na diet. Their diet, which consists of fish and bear meat, may supply only 60 mmol of Na per day,... 

Acid rain increases the acidity of some types of soil, resulting in the removal of essential nutrients from the soil. The loss of nutrients adversely affects the area s vegetation, leaving trees and other plants with less resistance to disease, insects, and bad weather. Acid rain also increases the acidity of streams, rivers, and lakes, which can kill or harm aquatic life. As Figure 26-8 shows, damage to trees and to outdoor surfaces can be extensive. Use In spite of their toxicity and cancerogenicity, the starch-rich rhizomes were once the main food of the New Zealand Maoris. In Japan the young leaves of the variety latiusculum ( Warabi ) are a favored vegetable. Leaves are used in a tea for rheumatism", leafstalk bases are used in Portugal as a tapeworm remedy. Leaf fronds are also used as a gritting material. 

Dried plant material This may occur in various ways. Low quality products contain stalks, seeds, leaves, and flowering tops. This may be compressed into blocks (West African and Caribbean material) or as loose material or rolled up and wrapped in vegetable leaves (Central and Southern Africa). High quality material contains mostly flowering tops and can be found rolled up or wrapped around bamboo sticks ( Buddha or Thai sticks) or sieved ( Kif ) and generally originates from Southeast Asia or parts of Africa. 

Perichaetial leaves in main clade ml are widely reflexed in taxa with curved capsules, non-plicate, without a costa, or rarely, with a costa, but then the costa less developed than in stem leaves. In contrast to this, the majority of species in main clade M2 have perichaetial leaves straight and more or less appressed to the base of the seta in taxa with curved capsules. Perichaetial leaves are also plicate, and often have a very thin but still discernible costa, which is often present even in species with ecostate vegetative leaves.

Those proteins derived from plant sources. This consists of proteins from the seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables, leaves, stalks, and roots. Common sources of plant proteins are the cereal grains and their products, and legumes, oil seeds, and green leafy vegetables. Plant proteins are less concentrated than animal proteins, and often lack some essential amino acids giving them a lower biological value.
